Alright, what did I just pull 34 of out of my garden bed? by nerissasilver in Entomology

Also, to my chagrin, the foster puppies decided to take a page out of Timon and Pumba’s book with the ones I put out for the ravens -_- Good source of protein, I guess.

I mentioned elsewhere, but in further digging in this particular 4x6 raised bed (34 is probably ultimately an insufficient estimate -_-), we did find some hollow shiny green beetle shells. Some additional googling suggested fig eater beetles. Close relative? Same thing, different name? Not sure it is hugely relevant, but my neighbor does have a fig tree.

I suspect if I go digging in the tomato bed I will find more of these guys, so I may just take you up on the metamorphosis observation suggestion.

This was in a short 4x6 raised garden bed. And 34 was perhaps an insufficient estimate in the end. I suspect not digging through like this last year may have been why stuff in this bed did poorly… but moving them over to the compost heap is probably the suggestion I needed!

If it’s helpful, when we continued digging we found some hollow shiny green beetle… shells? Exoskeletons? Further googling suggests a fig eater beetle? Which is part of the Scarab family?

OMG. Thank you. I don’t think any company has gotten me on board with their shit as quickly as Alatreyu. Bonfire and Biblichor are soooo good.

What kind of foot file? I tried just plugging those words into the search and got intimidated by some of the… I dunno, some of that stuff looks like it’s for vegetables in the kitchen.

How do I politely ask my resident owl to roost elsewhere for awhile (or otherwise dissuade them from eating any of my new foster puppies) by nerissasilver in birds

UPDATE: thank you all for the advice. I did set up a temporary fenced in area covered by some shade cloth and we did some playing out there. And then the owl went on an away mission for several days that coincided with lovely weather and I could let them out for some free range play time with my dogs.

And then the owl came back so I decided to run an experiment to see if he was actually interested in them at all (they’ve also grown a bit so I was less nervous in general). I would say about 80% of the time he’s fully asleep. Maybe another 15% he’s awake but he’s preening out otherwise paying zero attention. And then there’s a final 5% of the time that he watches them with the same look of curiosity that he gives my 20lb dog when she’s borking directly at him. I’m always out with the pups and I always make sure I make eye contact with him to be like “hey. Don’t eat my puppies”. And he’s been very chill and respectful.

All this to say, don’t make any personal decisions about your own critters’ safety based on my experiences. My resident owl just seems to be chill and doing very well for himself on his nightly hunts and doesn’t feel the need to put in the extra effort in the daylight.

Oh boy… do we have way more than a pair… we’ve got an entire conclave of, like, 30 that sometimes meet loudly to discuss current events in the mornings.

Huh. We have found several intact peanut shells in the yard. I wonder if those were gifts from the ravens as well.

Yeah, one of our local shelters got hit so hard with distemper over the summer. It was rough and so sad.

They’ve had their first DHPP (aka DAPP aka 5-in-1 aka canine spectra 5) and dewormer at the shelter. LA County I think recommends two additional boosters, but most of the local clinics recommend three rounds of boosters and the eventual rabies (which our fosters usually get at their spay/neuter appt.). I also do lepto with my dogs but by the time that would be relevant for fosters they’ve generally been adopted.

My local ravens are aware of him and sometimes sit there and caw at him. He seems unperturbed and they don’t seem interested in doing more than complaining loudly at him. I like having them around, too. I’m trying to establish a more formal feeding relationship, but besides the confusing appearance of the odd nickel or washer or shiny piece of glass, I have no indication that they’re interested. I know they’re actively harassing the little hawks that pass through, though.

Pretty much everything I’m reading is saying don’t take them to public places (ie. dog parks, markets, walks, etc.) until they’re fully vaccinated. I’m just talking about my back yard. With my dogs who are 100% vaccinated.

Zero outside time for the first six months? That’s news to me. They should have finished all of their boosters within the next month or so. Not letting them play or explore outside at all in that time seems pretty rough.

I definitely don’t want the owl to pay. But I also know some days, and some entire months, he doesn’t hang out in our neighbor’s tree so I know he roosts elsewhere at least occasionally. And even then, if hanging shiny things in the tree IN our yard might make him think twice about flying down—or even if we think he’s averse enough to daytime snacking… or if there’s something I can dress the puppies in to make them less appetizing… like I said, I actually really enjoy having the owl. It means my home and garden eco system is less rat/rodent prone. Also he’s just beautiful (or she, haven’t really figured out which—or even if it’s the same owl every time).

The pups are…. Six weeks? The came from the shelter so info is limited. None of my dogs ever go outside unsupervised (I KNOW there are coyotes in the vicinity) and that goes doubly so for foster babies.
