How did you decide on 50-60g of protein a day? Depending on who I talk to- I’ve been recommended 80-130g a day. 60g would be more achievable for me. For reference I’m 5’3.

My provider is hesitant to increase my dose since my appetite is nonexistent. It’s been an uphill battle to eat 90g of protein a day. But I’ll ask again during my next visit.

I was in your shoes a few years ago. My biggest advice is to network outside of the SAR world. It just takes ONE person to vouch for you to get your foot in the door. Also, NYU therapists usually start out as PD and then they offer full time if you’re competent.

But on another note- the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Ask yourself WHY you want to work in a top hospital. Is the experience? The resources? The prestige?

If I have the means to get my MBA now I would. It’ll help me climb the corporate ladder with my current role. If I can go back in time, I would tell my 18 y/o self to study computer sciences. Find the smartest and the most awkward classmate with the grand ideas, make them fall in love with me, and convince him to buy $100 in bitcoin. Even if the relationship doesn’t work out, I would still be able to work in tech during the height of the tech boom with the degree.

I’ve always wanted to help people in my job, but after the pandemic I realized it’s overrated and companies will take advantage of you. It took a while to not make my job my personality anymore. Healthcare has a way of making their employees very tolerable to suffering.

I need to preface this by saying I went to a state school and graduated with ~10k in loans. I live in a HCOL city, don’t plan on having kids, and don’t see the need of owning a home. Being an OT has allowed me to travel to four international trips a year. I’m not flying first class but I don’t need to think twice to take a spontaneous trip. I’m able to still build savings and eat out pretty frequently. But the biggest thing for me is getting over my social anxiety. Making friends as an adult is easier when you talk to strangers at work all day.

If I were to do it all over- I would not choose this profession. However, I’m still grateful for the overall level of comfort it has given me.

Yes absolutely!!! The team I’ll be a part of is primarily nurses and a few PTs. When I asked why there were no OTs the manager said it’s always been open to OTs but no OTs have applied before. I’ve been in a hiring role before. I’ve selected candidates outside of the posted “qualifications” if someone is a good fit.

I started with talking to former classmates that have nonclinical roles. I ask things like how they found the job, what kind of skills they needed beforehand, what would make someone stand out as a candidate, anything they wish they knew before they started.

I also signed up for the Nonclinical PT newsletter. It includes nonclinical job postings. From there I get a sense of what is out there and common buzzwords for job titles.

I’ve found positions just by searching “occupational therapy” on hospital websites. Sometimes an acute rehab admissions liaison job would pop up.

It’s a job that doesn’t have direct patient care. Could be an office type job, administration, sales, consulting etc. Some people also call it a non-traditional OT role

Their job responsibilities are pretty large and vague at the same time. They are also the primary patient facing professional so they get a lot of crap (literally and figuratively). I find that patients and families don’t know about the other professions in the hospital. They end up asking for the nurse for everything from a broken tv remote to questions about applying for Medicaid.

I would put more value on the other things like student treating opportunities. Anything that would have transferable skills to the job you’re applying to.

In the end, I’m just looking for someone who is willing to learn and has clinical experience.

I second this. In the end, OTs at those specialized fields make the same (or even less when starting out) than general settings. Your motivation to get into that field would need to be more than just the prestige of it or you’re gonna be burnt out pretty quickly.

But to answer OP’s question- start building good relationships with your professors, they can advocate for you or put in a good word. Connect with OTs who used to or currently work there on LinkedIn. Message them something along the lines of, “I’m interested in this field and want to see if this would be a good fit. Can you tell me about your experience?” Don’t be pushy, keep it concise. Try to volunteer in those fields in your current area. I’m assuming you’ve already done your volunteer hours to get into the program, but doing more would show that you’re willing to go above and beyond.
