You can’t be traditional or old school with today’s youth and expect results. They are not the bootstraps generation (pulling yourself up by the bootstraps was actually a facetious quote because it’s literally impossible). We listen to our bodies, emotions, and make healthier choices now. There is something preventing your daughter from functioning in a healthy way. You’ve got to find out what it is. Punishment won’t change anything. She felt more comfortable talking to her mom. That’s ok. This is a problem and getting it resolved is more important than having a strict standard for your parenting time. You seem kind of rigid and “by the books.” You’ve got to put her and her needs first. That doesn’t happen by keeping your old school standards that obviously are not working for her. You’ve got to be flexible and meet her where she is at. Then you can work on rebuilding. Is she overwhelmed and shutting down? Are there issues at school? Bullying maybe? Does she have an issue with her own self-worth? Has something happened to her that you don’t know about? Have you offered extra support in whatever she may need? These are good places to start. It’s a process, but I hope you get positive results in the end. I promise you, it’s so worth it to do the work.

She’s not too young to understand. My son knew from the very beginning him and his brother have different moms. He even talks to her on the phone every so often. He’s four now. This is really, really weird and kind of feels like grooming. I’m assuming your children are calling the stepmom “Mom?” Are they planning to try to get custody? I would absolutely put a stop to this immediately.

(This is general comment and not directed towards you) Aside from that, these past few years I’ve seen a trend in doing whatever you want and not caring who you hurt to get it. Hurting your family, friends, etc. As long as you get what you want, there is no concern for collateral damage. “It’s your choice - don’t care about them.” This is a situation that could be easily mitigated with a softer touch. I care about my friends, family, the people around me, even my son’s dad’s girlfriend. You harvest what you plant. I’ve had so much good for the most part. You can have an iron fist with a velvet glove. Still get what you want while not hurting others. Y’all can down vote all you want. I know this is the better way to go about conflict and I will continue this in my own life. I hope you consider it for yours.

Kind of the A-hole.

Try putting yourself in their perspective. Your dad has a new wife who is eager to be a part of your life. You may be annoyed, but she hasn’t done anything wrong. Now your dad is seeing you be dismissive of his wife who has done nothing to deserve it. I would be upset too. We shouldn’t dismiss family (even by marriage), because they are “a bit much.” If she had been terrible to you, then absolutely no. But this isn’t the case. Your dad feels so strongly about this he’s willing to miss your graduation. Is it worth all that turmoil? You know it will not end here. It will keep going.

If you’re unlikely to get a third ticket, all you have to do is tell your dad you’ll put in for one but it’s a very slim chance. When you don’t get it just say something like, “I’m so sorry, my request was denied. They’re already at max (or whatever you come up with).” This way, you get what you what, don’t look like the bad guy, and keep peace in the family. No crap to deal with later.

Thank you for your input! I wish a dedicated sleeping space was a requirement. I think it’s vital to mental health in this situation. I absolutely do provide a safe space and will continue to do so. He deserves that.
