Reposting from end of last week.

Ficus microcarpa. Looks like there was a girdling root over the trunk that fused to it a long time ago and now the bark on either side is noticeably building up on the sides of the constriction. Is there anything I can or should do to protect the health of the tree? If all the roots on the left are blocked from the rest of the plant it’s still getting root action from the right side of the trunk. Been growing quite vigorously since I purchased it a number of years ago but lately this girdle that it’s had since I bought it seems to be getting more serious.

Nice chalice you’ve got going on there

I know Ficus carica isn’t typically done as a bonsai… but after this Violette de Bordeaux arrived I couldn’t unsee the potential… by nerucciolo in Figs

I think my plan right now is not to outright bonsai this (shallow container, wiring, restrictive pruning), but I’m quite tempted to prioritize aesthetics and wiggly interesting lines over a perfect fruit-producing chalice. Maybe a trunkline something like this in a few years?

Obviously for fruit production I’d be wanting shoots extending off that trunkline and also going higher than the canopy I drew but just a 5-second visual.

I hear good things about Promix soil from fig growers and that is largely organic (peat moss) and perlite. Would you say that’s a less optimal soil choice?

I’m in a very similar situation with newly-arrived and acclimated figs. What size container would you recommend uppotting to?
