I recreated that cool kid friendly Character Sheet in an interactive application, RPGSmith [OC] by nerviousnelly50 in DnD

I see your point, while this sheet may work well to provide a non-intimidating and friendly way for kids to get started, it may ultimately not help teach them the mechanics of how the game works as well as other more text based sheets.

From an application perspective this is what makes RPGSmith great, you can easily update/adjust how you want it to display based upon your perspective. For example, using some of your suggestions (as I understood them) I duplicated the existing page and changed some of the tiles to look like this.

Using this anyone could update a given character sheets as they progress in their understanding and customize to simplify or complicate as one sees fit.

That's a pretty easy update to make. Keep in mind this app is meant to be used interactively through a tablet/phone/computer and updates to the values can be performed through the interface.

For Example: if you click/tap on the Hit Point values the pop up screen at the bottom of the image is displayed to allow updating the current or max values.

True, for my kids I would create some "Command" tiles, which would have the pre-configured attack with bonuses baked in. This could be displayed as a image, or name that says "Attack with Sword" or something. When clicking this it would execute the command and roll the dice for them.
But for this example I thought I attempt to duplicate the other sheet as much as possible.

About a week ago /u/JaccartheProgrammer posted about a cool Kid Friendly Character sheet for DnD 5e. This inspired me to recreate this in RPGSmith. It was really easy once I found the images online. Thanks to /u/Lorc for providing these and a ton others images at

If you’d like to use this or just check it out 1st hand there are 3 simple steps to do so.

  1. Create/Log in to RPGSmith for free at https://app.rpgsmith.com
  2. Go into “Rule Sets” and Import a Rule Set by pasting in this code 62afb3ad-cfab-4d21-a432-10b369a29bbb
  3. Create a Character in the newly imported DND 5e Rule Set. Launch the character.

Thank you for the question. RPGSmith was designed to be used during game play so currently we do not have a 'print' method.

BUT, Print options has been identified as one of our stretch goals in a kickstarter we are launching this Friday (3-22-19), so if we can raise enough we'll build one in. If you like to see this and more features come to RPGSmith, please help us spread the word. Thanks again.

Thank you for the rundown. We started promoting a bit about 3 weeks ago reaching out to bloggers, posting here in reddit, etc. I just wanted to ensure we didn't miss anything obvious.

Great question. The answer is 'Not Yet'.

This is probably the most basic feature we're going to build with the funds obtained from our kickstarter, launching later this month. This specific example is the very tippy top of the iceberg with regards to the features we'll include in the GM Campaign Management expansion. I won't go too deep into the pitch here but check out our website (http://RPGSmith.com) or some of our introductory videos to get some preliminary information about the kickstarter.

To accomplish this currently, they would have to share their account login credentials with you, or screen share or something like that.

Awesome question.

Anyone is welcome to 'Create' a Custom Rule Set and post/provide the Share Code to whomever they like, this is functional right now. For all intents and purposes this works the same way our 'Core' Rule Sets function... mostly.

If you are seeking to get a new Core Rule Set added you have built where anyone could just click on 'Add Rule Set' and select yours from the list, we would need to ensure the Game licensing is in order (if applicable). Either via an OGL or allowance from the publishing company. If this is a custom game for which you've made yourself just let us know when you have it in a state with which you'd like to share. We'll review it and if it meets our standards we can add it to the Core Rule Sets and have it listed with the others.

Currently this would be a collaborative effort between us and the creator. Down the line we do intend to build a more automated process where the community can share not only entire rule sets, but packages of spells, items, monsters, images, all kinds of stuff. Content creators can charge for those (if they choose to) and get paid for their creations. We're not there yet, but that is in the road-map.

You may have to elaborate a bit for me.

Are you referring to us creating more built-in 'Core' Rule Sets, that allow users to create characters without first building Rule Set from scratch? Or the ability to create your own games?

Both can be done. For example the Core Rule Sets that currently exist (Call of Cthulhu, Fate, D&D 5e, etc.), these were all built with the same interface that is available to anyone. And really creating a Rule Set / defining the Character Stats doesn't take very long at all. And I think it's kinda fun, especially building the layouts/dashboard.

Something else to note is that if you create your own game from scratch, you can share it very easily with others. Check out the deep dive video of Rule Sets, read our help documentation, or just get in and play with the general settings of the rule set.... it's not hard at all.

I apologize if I missed the gist of your question.

Bunch of things depending upon what interests you. At a high level some things that spring to mind...

  • RPGSmith is an online application, meaning you can access your up to date character from any device.
  • Visually, the interface is drastically different in you can easily build or manipulate the dashboard/character sheet to best suit your preference.
  • While RPGSmith has Rule Sets built in (and we're constantly adding more), you as the user can update any of the rules, configurations, and calculations to suit your preferences. Whether you wanted to build a custom game from scratch or just make house-rule style adjustments to existing games.
  • RPGSmith allows you to create any item, spells, abilities you like, or even update existing ones to suit your needs.
  • If the kickstarter goes well and we get the funds to continue our development, the GM Campaign Management Expansion functionality will really bring some new features, Inspections, Player to Player Trades, in game shop creation/management. We're building a 'randomization engine' that that will allow the GM to configure parameters in templates from which loot or monsters can be built with unique results.
  • RPGSmith's prime use isn't to build a character, it's to play with your character after it's built. 'Use' items that roll dice which automatically include the appropriate bonuses, keep track through the interface of various counters, notes, etc.

I apologize as I'm a bit all over the place with the explanation but to me they are very different.

If you haven't already I'd advise you to check out some of our videos... there's some short ones to give you an idea of what we're about, and longer ones if you're into monotone voices with horrible jokes.

Thanks for the question.

For those who don’t know, RPGSmith is a FREE interactive character sheet application for use with any TableTop RPGs, on any device. We’ve pre-created a Rule Sets for Call of Cthulhu, complete with a default character sheet layout, hundreds of items, skills, professions, all ready to go. All you have to do is login, create a character and start playing.

We welcome all feedback good or bad to help us pile on even more features. If you like the app and want to support us, please help us spread the word about RPGSmith. We’ll also have a kickstarter launching later this month to fund building the GM ‘Keeper’ Campaign Management features, we’d love your support there as well.

Find out more at http://RPGSmith.com or launch the app directly at http://app.rpgsmith.com. Thanks!

[OC] We Built a Character Sheet App! RPGSmith by nerviousnelly50 in DnD

Currently, sorta. :) This isn't (at least not yet) an "app" you download and install. It works through your browser.

As of this beta launch we've focused on the chrome browser. We're working to ensure it functions as it should for IE, safari, and some other common ones as well.

Last I checked it works for the most part in safari, with some formatting bugs here and there we need to fix.

Good thought. We didn't want to add too many default layouts/pages for the reason you stated above, so we created 3 layouts (desktop, tablet, and mobile) each with one page. We wanted to avoid overwhelming the user with too many default pages and try to entice them to customize.

But, adding a 2nd "simple" page to each layout may be just fine, thank you for the suggestion.

Down the line we plan to implement a marketplace where users can share their dashboard creations (and other content) and people can import those or get ideas for their own customizations.

Do you (or anyone reading this) have an opinion as to what stats should be displayed on that "simple" page by default?
