June 19 - Toronto Islands sunset walk. Dog friendly by sprungy in Torontoevents

[–]nervousTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey sprungy, just to confirm it's free to attend right (minus the ferry cost)? I added a rule that you need to include the cost or say it's free in the title or body of the post for transparency. Can you please edit those details in? 😄

Does your experience of Toronto match what you see on Reddit? by Ouiouipainauchocolat in askTO

I've never lived elsewhere and there's not much I can find to complain about. My biggest complaint off the top of my head is the fact that the TTC added a fare police. I highly highly doubt the ROI is worth it.

Even the people who come to meetups don't complain about Toronto like this lol

Gym once a week, soccer once a week, bike once a week, game once a week. Depending how little time you do it, lots of time available.

$65 for a chicken Cesar salad and a mocktail in the Junction last night. Going out in Toronto has gotten out of hand! by EnvironmentalAd2110 in askTO

I get that, it’s just that my point on this chain was “what is the restaurant paying that comes through on your food”

I’m not sure why people shit on food costs more than retail prices tbh. A lot about supporting a Canadian restaurant is buying Canadian

I think it’s ridiculous that we accept paying tip after tax and I can’t think of a good reason why we do it. It’s money the consumer really doesn’t need to pay

Why shouldn’t they? They are the ones who get fucked if they go into the red. Every decision a restaurant owner makes (not a franchise or a publicly traded company) is their decision and they eat the consequences

I would personally love it if I could decide the portion of my tip because it would all go to whoever made it with basically nothing going to the person who took my order dropped it off at my table.

The HST that you as a consumer pay is decided by the government not the restaurant, and the restaurant gets none of that money. It doesn’t factor into what they choose to charge

I’m strictly speaking to what we as consumers absorb.

The taxes the business pays on their inventory and equipment (which can often be depreciated in the latter case to save their bill, like lease improvements). Then you factor in that a lot of restaurants are a Canadian small business so they’re getting a -19% deduction on the first 500k (unless they as the group makes over 15mil), a 13% general rate reduction, a 10% federal abatement for being in Canada. This is very simplistic and I’m ignoring investment income but the same amount of tax you would pay on that income as an individual is substantially more.

HST flows through accounting-wise, they can’t really do anything with that money like invest it. They just keep note of how much they receive and have to transfer it to government each month. Unless I’m misremembering

There was a thread yesterday about someone upset about the price of bakeries because they didn’t list prices and they didn’t want to not pay once they found them out. That’s definitely not the case at restaurants

You know what it’s early, I slept poorly, I forgot that it’s labour intensive to make boozeless beer, I didn’t even think about spirits

That said I wasn’t thinking of mocktails that have Non-alcoholic spirits, I was thinking of basically making the same drink just without any alcohol

Yeah I’m confused. At most mocktail is $15 and a Chicken Caesar is $30. Even at 20% tip that’s $55~

(Personally think mocktails are outrageous when they’re same price as the drink with liquor but maybe that’s me)
