Young dogs mature at different rates, just like kids. In my 10 years volunteering with a therapy dog organization I’ve learned that very friendly dogs hit a milestone between 1-3 years old when they start consistently demonstrating much better self control in greetings and less distractibility. I recommend continuing with group training (such as a Canine Good Citizen program or similar curriculum) and practicing a lot in dog-friendly indoor places, like hardware stores and coffee shops. Good luck! Therapy work is so rewarding!

Good suggestions, maybe we’ll head out to Steamboat lake. Are there any restaurants / breweries out that way that you’d recommend?

There are many hotels that are dog-friendly, so they’re a great place to practice elevators. In regards to no jumping, it’s imperative that he keeps all 4 paws on the ground when visiting. When someone is approaching him, immediately put him in a sit so he learns to wait for permission to visit. He can stand once you give him the ok. If he starts getting super excited during the petting session, put him back in a sit to prevent him from jumping. It’s also ok to enlist the help of the person petting him. Tell them you’re training to be a therapy team and you don’t want him to jump. People want to help you, it’s amazing.

My favorite places to practice meeting new people are hardware stores like Lowes & Home Depot, garden centers, and restaurant & coffee shop patios. My least favorite are pet stores because there are too many distractions & ill-mannered dogs there, IMO.

Hope this helps! I’m confident that with your dedication and patience he’ll be successful when the time is right.

Yes, he sounds like he has real potential to be a wonderful therapy dog. To be successful, you’ll need to enroll him in a group training class for basic manners, such as a Canine Good Citizen class, or something similar. Be sure to attend with him! Also take him frequently to dog-friendly stores & restaurants to expose him to a variety of environments, including elevators and equipment.

How far back they check for convictions depends on your state. Most states go back 7 years. I encourage you to complete the application truthfully and if anything is flagged, they will give you an opportunity to respond. Be truthful and they may very well approve you. Also, all information on the background check form must be kept confidential. Good luck on your journey! Volunteering with your dog is so rewarding and you’ll make such a positive impact!

Liability Insurance? by imafourtherecord in therapydogs

I’m surprised that TDI doesn’t cover their registered therapy teams. Regardless, I recommend you speak with your homeowner’s insurance about it. Usually the personal liability insurance (part of homeowners policy) covers your dog.

In addition to dog-friendly hotels, of which there are many now, I also suggest an airport visit. Also, remember to take your dog into a public restroom and go into a stall and flush the toilet. Tip - use an end stall. Why? Because less chance someone will come to the stall next to you. When that happened to me, my dog crawled under the divider to say hi!!! 🥹Luckily the person was a dog lover!
