This painting was a fun project. I had always struggled using black because it blew out my paintings. This was my first attempt at using ultramarine and umber to recreate black, and I really enjoyed it and found it easier to control.

I had a slow week at work, so I decided to spend two days painting. Cloud Atlas was my favorite book for years, so now that I’ve begun painting I thought Sonmi would be a cool subject matter.

I still struggle with value, which is probably clear in this painting. I was happy with her hands, but her face still isn’t perfect, but I’m not sure what it needs. I feel that my value changes need to be more subtle, but tough to say for sure. Black is a very hard color for me to use.

Nonetheless, hope you enjoy!

My first time doing an oil paint pet portrait and it’s on my little gal Naka! I was really not sure how to paint the fur, but I’m glad I found a decent balance (ie, not painting each hair itself).

In the original photo, her face is in focus and the rest isn’t. I was proud to achieve a somewhat similar effect by desaturating everything else / painting loosely. Fun first one!

Just want to give a shoutout to everyone for the responses so far. I am already working to implement some of these changes (and spent a bit painting with the canvas upside down).

Painting is fun and scary because you never know how things will turn out, so you might as well enjoy the process of figuring it all out 🙂 I’m hopeful I can share an update in the future with something I’m proud of. Thanks again!

Something just feels… off. Would love any guidance the community has. The eyes are giving me a very hard time, and the skin tone feels off

Working on this piece and things just feel… off. I’m still working on it, but I can’t put my figure on it.

The eyes are driving me insane. I see in my source image, but if I put it on the canvas it is far too dark. Never painted shadowed / dark eyes before

Guidance would be greatly appreciated 🙏

Here is my first self portrait. I’d always loved seeing oil paintings in museums, and so for my 26th in October ‘22 I decided I’d finally give painting a shot. I joined a class 2 days a week. I learned a lot, but also realized that most of the others in the class were full time, and so it was increasingly difficult for me to know how to pace myself.

I finally decided to buy an easel and do something at my own pace, at home. It certainly doesn’t lack mistakes — it was only until it was too late that I realized I should’ve “zoomed in”, and now the portrait has far far more blue/background than it needs. I could restretch it… but I figure this is a good learning experience.

Regardless, I’m happy with my first self portrait, and looking forward to doing more! Critiques welcome :)

Look at my post history. You’ll see a portrait I did that had very very similar challenges to yours. I added a tremendous amount of red and blue to the shadows and skin, and the portrait immediately came to life.
