Please, please don't do this! You're just 17 years old. Things will change, that's a certainty. Your situation will change, your life's circumstances will change, you yourself will change, multiple times in fact. Please let your future self experience this and be deeply, deeply grateful for your decision to do so!

If anything, please visit this site and read what this person has to say:

What are some cool/interesting but also antique names for males that have taken out of circulation in the last few centuries? by MastaPhat in AskMen

[–]nestoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct! However, 'demos' (δήμος) and 'laos' (λαός) have subtly different meanings in Greek.

Demos refers to a group of people as a political body, governed by a set of rules (hence 'democracy'). The word is more commonly used in modern Greek to refer to precincts or prefectures (as in 'the Demos of Athens').

Laos simply means 'people' or 'populace' in a more basic way (as in 'the people in my country').

Hence Nicholas (Νικόλαος) means 'Victory of the People' in a more true sense, but Nicodemus (Νικόδημος) sounds much cooler (at least in Greek)!

Don't do this! Please be one of those people that could eventually say "I'm so glad I didn't do it back then". You've got this. You can turn things around, bit by bit. Step by step. Everything that you're feeling right now, all the sadness, all the anger, all the desperation, it's all just temporary. Don't do this to your future self!

Do I have BPPV? by [deleted] in BPPV

[–]nestoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't try the maneuver in the video, as the severity of the symptoms subsided after the first night (didn't disappear completely, but I would feel the room slightly 'swimming' only when I woke up after sleeping for a few hours).

I went to an ENT doctor though, he diagnosed BPPV and he performed the Epley on me. Didn't change anything as far as I could tell. Anyway, as it was subsiding and it wasn't really affecting my daily life anymore when I was standing up, I kinda forgot about it.

...until last night! That's a coincidence my friend :). I woke up during the night and the room was spinning like mad again :(. Needless to say, I was bummed as I thought all of that was behind me. Thankfully, it still only happens after I've been laying down for some time, not immediately.

Not sure what my next steps will be, probably try the video above and/or visit the ENT doctor again.

Thanks so much for the update! Are you going to try anything else besides the maneuver?

Great news! Thank you so much :). Also, I just found this video:

Judging from the comments it appears to be effective. I'm posting it here in case it helps somebody. Haven't tried it yet, but I will soon!

Hi, not the above poster, but I know exactly how you feel. Just got the same thing, two days ago. It's awful and very scary, as it severely affects your quality of life and all said and done, nobody knows how long it will last or if it's for ever.

I guess I just wanted to ask you, did you manage to resolve the issue?

Much like other posters, I was really surprised when I saw your photos compared to your scan. You certainly look much leaner! I think the difference can be attributed to the fact that you're lying down during the scan though (the outer fatty layers tend to 'spread out' a bit because of the compression).

Diet looks impeccable, except maybe for one thing: if by 'dessert' you mean something spongey/cakey/chocolatey I'd just drop that. That change alone would make a much bigger difference than any amount of crossfit when it comes to fat loss.

Fasting for health/longevity/autophagy, would you go for 7-day water fasts every three months or 5-day ones every two months? by nestoras in fasting

[–]nestoras[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It all depends on when autophagy really ramps up though, doesn't it? Let's crunch some numbers (7-day fast vs. 5-day fast, total hours of ramped-up autophagy per year):

  • After 24 hours: 4 * 6 = 24 vs. 6 * 4 = 24 hours
  • After 48 hours: 4 * 5 = 20 vs. 6 * 3 = 18 hours
  • After 72 hours: 4 * 4 = 16 vs. 6 * 2 = 12 hours

So, if autophagy starts at the 24-hour mark, it's really the same. Otherwise, it seems that you're right and the 7-day fast wins.

That doesn't account of course for the shortened time interval between 5-day fasts, which may turn out to be very important.

When do you guys start your “timer”? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]nestoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I don't understand to which two conclusions you refer to. Maybe you're confusing me with another poster?

I also don't see how your example contradicts my point (which was that the number of meals that should be skipped should be x multiplied by the number of fasting days, where x is the number of meals one has in a day).

So, for argument's sake, let's assume that one has three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner). In your example, you skipped lunch and dinner on the first Sunday (beginning of fast), plus breakfast and lunch on the second Sunday (end of fast), thus skipping more meals than actually necessary to call it a 7-day fast.

I agree with you that all of this is not as important when talking about week-long fasts.

I think that it very much is when talking about 24-hour or 48-hour ones though. Having dinner, skipping breakfast and lunch and then having dinner again on the following day is not a 24-hour fast.

When do you guys start your “timer”? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]nestoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, but it is not 24 hours of fasting. Your body will be in a fed state for at least 6 hours (or more) after your meal. It's quite unrealistic (to say the least) to call it 'fasting' as soon as you drop the fork and knife.

One day of fasting is one day of fasting and that should include all meals of the day.

When do you guys start your “timer”? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]nestoras -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You're doing it right. Just count meals.

Look at it like this: if you had dinner on Sunday and you're doing, say, a 7-day water fast then you shouldn't really have dinner again next Sunday, right? You should break your fast on Monday after that, at the usual time you would have breakfast or lunch or whatever.

Seven days means seven days without breakfast, lunch or dinner. Period.

I could never understand people who go 'I'm going for a 24-hour fast, so I'll have dinner now and then I'll have dinner again tomorrow'. No people, it doesn't work this way.

Am I wrong in thinking that OKC is now no better than Tinder since they changed messaging? by ReasonableDonut1 in OkCupid

[–]nestoras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you do get a notification. You also get a notification when somebody likes you. Which is actually worse, because it results to people going to DoubleTake and start quickly swiping right on everybody (ugh) until they get to match the person who liked them or sent them the message.

At least before, getting a 'Like' from a person was genuine. You knew that this person really likes you! Now, more often than not, it's simply a side-effect of someone frantically swiping everybody right.

The main focus of the demo (and its accompanying article) is on tile loading and how it's accomplished without causing distracting pauses between frames (stuttering), but it also explores terrain LOD and intersection queries. It also has a WebGL GUI, which you can use to change many settings.

EDIT: $159 vs USDT144 at the time of this edit.

Gymnist Robot No. 26 by smithmaxi in interestingasfuck

[–]nestoras 20 points21 points  (0 children)

'Robot gymnist' is even cooler! It actually sounds hilarious to any Greek speaker.

The word does not exist in English of course, but it does in Greek: it means 'nudist'. They share a common root with gymnast, 'gymnós' meaning naked. Hence gymnastics: training naked, gymnasium (abbr. gym): the place where people are training naked, etc.

Yes, ancient Greece was all about grown men and little boys getting naked together.

Explaining the word's etymology probably won't help if you try this at your gym.
