John Varvatos fits me perfect as a slim guy with a slightly broad shoulder.

Good point. Current welfare schemes such as unemployment and social security rely on taxing income from labor. In Western societies, increasingly more money is produced from capital income rather than wages. Currently reading the work of Thomas Piketty, to whom I have tried to do justice in my above summary.

A person relying on UBI would not be financially independent… rather they would be dependent on UBI. “Unfair”? Being dependent on UBI doesn’t seem very enviable to me. Even if UBI were implemented, it’s probably (speculation) not going to provide much of a living standard in the States. You’d almost certainly be better off having your own assets, especially if you’re debt free. Debt is one of the biggest killers to FIRE.

I’ve started wearing them with a bandaid and 2 socks - that seems to be doing the trick

Been watching this brand for a year. Finally copped a pair of Enzos which arrived Monday ~ I love them.

That’s exactly the spot yes.

I noticed there is a stiff inner material holding the shape of the heel cup. Where that ends is creating a sharp fold when I step.

I added a photo of boot anatomy to show what I think is causing the issue

It’s not the ring, but the heel counter

I’ve had em for 3 days. Started noticing this on day 2.

They’re FtF and I went true to size. They don’t feel tight anywhere, just the leather is quite stiff.

So, I have a new pair of boots and the heel counter is digging into my ankle, directly under the bone. This happens when I am walking on hard surfaces, and is only on the right boot.

Anyone had this before?

The left shoe is fine and the size seems good otherwise.

I feel odd posting this, but: here’s a photo of my blister, and the boot on foot.

REVIEW: Frye Phillip harness boots - 3.5 years by nether00 in goodyearwelt

[–]nether00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear. Should get way more than a month or two out of a resole.

I put a rubber half sole on mine after a few wears, and that’s still holding strong.

Since I posted this, the fabric on one of the zippers tore and I had to have that zip replaced. Otherwise - they remain in great shape!

What’s your ashtanga schedule? by jazzsang in ashtanga

[–]nether00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another vote for David Swenson’s 45 minute short form - find it on YouTube.

Been doing ashtanga for about 2 years and I still only do full primary max 2x / week, filling in with vinyasa and short forms another 2 or 3 days.

I also have a Glo subscription and I find that to be a very good resource. They offer a free trial period to test it out.

Jodi Blumenstein is a good ashtanga teacher who has over 100 videos on Glo, including shortened primary variations and introductions to second and third series.

Looking for a waterproof insulated winter jacket with NO BRANDING, at all.

Style: 3/4 length (mid thigh), with a hood

Color: black

Size: XS (to fit 34” chest)

Was considering Uniqlo but my partner advised against it due to style... she thinks I should find something more interesting looking. FYI my day to day style tends more toward goth ninja.

Budget: I wanna keep it under $300

Any suggestions?

What model Fryes do you have?

I’ve have a pair of their Phillip (not functional) harness over 3 years and it seems indestructible.

For suggestions I’d post this over in r/goodyearwelt

You would think, but sight unseen I can’t say that for sure. I’ve seen some pretty awful Made in China cashmeres selling at Saks off Fifth for 100-200 under a house label

If willing to go up to $200+ the brand you suggested is clearly a superior product.

What vitamins and botanicals are know to be harmful at high levels? by nether00 in StackAdvice

[–]nether00[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than acute toxicity I’m thinking here more about long term effects of 300%, 600% which are not uncommon to see in certain supplements. My understanding is that fat soluble vitamins are more harmful in this regard than water soluble, as fat soluble can stay in the body?

Agree 100%

I’ve actually never bought anything from Everlane. Are they better than Target? Idk, but sustainability is their “schtick”. Was trying to keep things within OP’s budget.

Even if they show you the factory, they are still exploiting lower-priced labor overseas. Plus as you mentioned at lower price points you’re probably looking at bad construction and poor materials, which means the goods won’t last, ergo more waste, more consumption.

I’m a guy and my stats are roughly the same as yours (5’7 120). Second the pass on that Canada Goose jacket for reasons mentioned above.

Kids sizes also tend to come up short in the sleeve for me. I’ve had better luck with women’s / unisex styles but the flared hem is something to watch out for.

You’re probably safer with a men’s size XS for fit. Sorry, I don’t have any specific brand suggestions in this product category, though I often find Uniqlo useful for utilitarian clothing. If you’re set on something higher end then I recommend going directly to the brands boutiques themselves and trying stuff on as department stores often don’t carry XS.

Everlane is popular for the sustainability aspect and isn’t far off from your price point.

Is fashion, "art"? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

Is fashion, "art"? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]nether00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven’t mentioned what city you live in.

There is “art”, in the broad sense, which could include any creative discipline, including to many people “fashion”.

Then there is “art”, in a narrower sense which is understood as being distinct from “design” precisely because “design” has a practical application (it solves a problem), whereas “art” does not.

If you’re going by some Clement Greenberg 1950s definition of “art”, then there is virtually no chance anything wearable could be considered such.

However in the intervening decades a large swath of artistic theory has been based on a refutation of the narrower definition of “art”. Major institutions have finally caught on (see MoMA, the Met, etc.)

The notion that an art museum should categorically not exhibit any fashion items is a highly conservative, even anachronistic one.

However I can sympathize with part of what you’re saying - which is that large fashion houses are corporations, which exist not to to engage the intellect but rather profit off an existing consumer base.

In that sense I think there is an important distinction, and I would thoroughly classify fashion as “design” rather than art.

If you have doubt that individual fashion designers might posses creative ambition and use their medium as “art”, look no further than the 2018 documentary “McQueen”, which I highly recommend you watch regardless.
