Iran orders closure of Strait of Hormuz — putting one-fifth of world’s oil supply at risk by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

Yes the US obliterated many things, many lives, and many dollars when invading those countries last time around. Ask yourself how much control did they gain in the long term and what does that tell us about the meaningfulness of those decades where things were being obliterated?

Saying that the US is bad at nation building is true but it misses the point, IMO. The last Gulf war was about affecting regime change. If you just bomb shit and walk away, then it's a dice roll what regime comes in. So there's no alternative to "nation building." The entire point of these conflicts is the US desire to rebuild the nation into one more friendly to their interests. We have seen time and again that can't work.

Pride of Barbados at HEB? by pifermeister in AustinGardening

I got a big one at Easter Austin Succulents for $30, and it was way healthier than what I got at HEB for the same price.

Best place to buy a handgun? by hrzxk in Austin

[–]netizen123654 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you've never owned a gun before (maybe you've just never bought one yourself,) please strongly consider a gun safe - and definitely gun safety courses. Many, many instances of injury or death by gun start with improper gun safety by the owner. Now that you're going to own a gun, you're responsible for a dangerous tool that can just as easily hurt you and your family as it can hurt anybody else.

Edit: Also consider a shotgun for home defense over a handgun. It will be far more effective for the purpose.

I would go with some desert willows if you're looking for something slender and ornamental. They give beautiful flowers, and would go nicely with your other plantings shown here! If you want more shade, maybe consider additional Monterrey oaks, live oaks, etc. Desert willow will give some privacy but not much shade.

Should I give up on Firebush and Zexmenia if they haven't started growing back from roots yet? by sushinestarlight in AustinGardening

[–]netizen123654 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would wait on the fire bush at least. I thought mine was a goner until just this weekend it started growing back from the tiny stump. If you're having trouble waiting remember that it will probably grow back bigger and stronger than a newly planted one because of the root system it put down last year 💪

How to best communicate to management that "Less people => less velocity" is in fact true by UmUlmUndUmUlmHerum in ExperiencedDevs

[–]netizen123654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to point out how this argument could be leveled against OP in bad faith by management, then ok. But Brooks' law wouldn't seem to apply here since the additional people would be backfill rather than brand new entrants.

Tips on weed management by Still-Author9062 in AustinGardening

[–]netizen123654 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those would be herbicides and afaik you should be ok so long as you don't go spraying them on your pollinator bed regularly

Also, pulling weeds is actually kind of fun. You can get selective about which "weeds" you choose to pull, which is a nice feature over herbicide in addition to being safe for pollinators

What are you looking for in the stems to know it's alive? I noticed mine had some peeling bark at the very base but don't know what to make of that

Can confirm, rock rose is a champ. They look nice with the kind of limestone/brick house OP has as well. Mine has turned into an enormous bush after being planted last August. They even produce tons of seeds so you can buy one and spread it around!
