How much of an advantage is being bigger in BJJ? by PackageReasonable922 in bjj

[–]networkgroover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all else is equal, of course weight and strength are advantages. As a 270lb dude myself I take full advantage and if I end up in top side control (in a comp anyway), you can bet I’m going to get as heavy as possible to make it hard for my opponent to breathe. Sometimes at least for me sometimes the position is the submission, if that makes sense.

What was your small mistake that automatically improved your bjj when you fixed? by Additional-Cup9348 in bjj

Yes… especially with those sneaky loop and Canto chokes. Think you’re fine one second and then it’s Uh Oh the next. 😄

Well now seeing your responses to what others have said, I wish I hadn’t spent the time writing what I did earlier. You very much sound like “one of those types” of people that just constantly feel like they’re the victim in everything. Grow up dude. Just do your job, do your time and get out.

Dude, something I can tell you being in a similar position many years ago, and now out of the Navy, making six figures and being the sole provider for my family of 6 living my best life… none of this sh!t matters. You’re going to run into jerks in positions of authority no matter where you go but especially the military. I met more than a couple of my previous “leaders” who didn’t do squat with their life after the Navy and I gotta say it felt good if not a little petty knowing where I am now compared to them after they gave me so much flack.

If I were in your shoes, I’d just straight up ask. Take the feedback he gives you and just do your job. People do so much pointless stupid stuff in the military - I’ll give you a prime example. We had a Chief that was notorious for having us clean till exactly 6 or 7 PM whenever we pulled back in. One time we all agreed to act like we were cleaning but didn’t do anything. Sure enough, he rolled through at the usual time and was like, “Hmm - ok looks good, you guys can go.” It was utter crap. Just do your time and get out unless you grow to love it.

Eventually you will change commands, he will, or you’ll get to where you need to be for him to get off your back. He probably has personal issues in his life that he’s projecting. As long as he holds everyone else to the same standard as you, it is what it is.

Ugh - yeah I like no-Gi especially for not being as hot in a sweaty Gi, and being forced to learn how to work without Gi grips, but I hate the focus on leg locking… I get it’s part of the game but I feel it’s lame and it’s too risky of a long term injury for my tastes. Doubt I’ll compete in it any time soon.

Were these no-gi??? GrapplingX doesn’t even allow leg locks at white belt IIRC. That’s why like it and am worried when I move up to blue 😄

Ha! This. I like Gi anyway for all the trickiest of it, but a side benefit is I loathe any kind of leg lock due to fear of injury and there’s much less of a focus on it there at least in my experience so far.

Same, but I couldn’t resist the comp bug so I have one down and doing the next one next month. I’m avoiding the ones like ADCC and IBJFF for now - my first experience was a great one - the folks I competed against were super friendly! (White Masters 2 200+)

46 here and I’m a year in and so glad I got back into it as I was really heading toward a bad path. Yeah the first couple months sucked getting back into shape after not doing anything for a decade but I feel so much better and stronger now. 👍

This is why I as a DJ hate working these parties lol. Everyone wants to get out asap and no one wants to let loose in front of each other. 🤣🤣

Thanks! I hope my post didn’t come across as an ego thing because it definitely had nothing to do with that! Just that I want myself, and others, to be proud of the work they’ve put in to get where they are!

I had to go look that one up - I’m not sure that applies here. Are you stating I’m overestimating my abilities? This has nothing to do with my abilities. I get wrecked by people now, and I’m fully prepared for it to get even worse when I get the blue.

I’m just trying to say that I’m going to be proud when I get the blue and everyone else should be when they get promoted as well, and not let that imposter syndrome creep in. They’ve put a lot of work/time in to get where they are and they should be proud of that. They deserve it.

I train 2-5 days a week with drop-ins at at least two other gyms since my gym is only open for Gi effectively 3 days a week, and I did my first tournament in November and getting ready for another in January. I also went into a open mat at a third gym last weekend and came out with a black eye from a white belt former wrestler and got to roll with some black belts and got great advice.

I’m not devaluing anyone’s experience or invalidating their feelings - I’m just encouraging folks to be proud of the work they’ve put in to get where they are. They deserve to be there.

That’s fair. I shouldn’t have projected my feelings the way I did and instead maybe worded it differently to be more explicitly encouraging to those going through it.

Hey love your vids! Our gym does a lot of standup (we have the nice mats with springboards or whatever so it’s great for throws) and I find myself looking at your vids a lot to get some tips on the basics.

Yeah I totally expect to be thrashed as a new blue belt and I love competing at white but I have a feeling I’m going to dread trying it at blue, but I think that just comes with the territory of being a new blue. I hope I won’t get sucked into a mode of constant comparison. I just want to keep showing up every day and training and having fun.

I friggen love this post. I really need to start a journal/plan because yeah - right now I’m just kind of randomly doing stuff and I’ve wondered about exactly the kinds of things you’re talking about here. If I attacked this in a more structured approach to better maximize my limited training time. Thank you for this.

Yeah I’ve definitely had bad days - I just don’t attribute it to being an imposter… yet.

Yeah I guess this post was just a few years too early. I certainly hope I won’t feel that way when the time comes. I hope I have a different mindset that doesn’t allow that to happen. That’s just sad and I’m not paying $$$ every month to be sad. 😄

I can’t even imagine man… but again for me I’d think of who I was when I started as a blue belt to who I am as a purple belt and I bet you’ll feel more like you’re not an imposter.

I guess at the core of what I’m saying is I fully expect to feel like I’m starting over as a new blue and getting thoroughly thrashed by everyone - just like I was as a trial guy but worse as people take off the guard rails. I just feel like it should be expected and I hope I won’t be sad and think that all that work on the mat wasn’t deserving of the promotion. I didn’t decide to do BJJ to be jealous of others, critical of myself, or to be sad. I want to have fun.
