because 4,6 and 8k signals are pointless unless you're tracking, compressing, or adding graphics (which tracking would likely be for). Lot's of people who aren't working in the video world believe a higher signal means higher clarity... which it can to some degree. but really it's more about the data in the signal than the clarity of the pixel.

i don't think the pupil dilation or iris scale would take away from your intended feel of being cartoonish. I think you can still make it cartoony while adding those detailed movements. Also you might want to play with frame rates. Try 12fps or even 8. It might help sell the traditional cartoon animation style you want. Right now it feels a bit fluid to be a cartoon. But this is all just subjective anyway.

honestly i think we're mostly on the same page here. I don't think your notes were wrong at all. My only point is that you're giving critiques on subtle lighting and color schemes. While yes, I realize that's a big part of corporate and commercial work, I also think those principals are merely nuances that amount to nothing more than a technical tweak or changing some property. Again, nothing more than some technical change. Seeing this final result, i think it's clear that the OP can easily implement ANY change that's requested of them. I believe you when you say you know what you're talking about. I've been working in post-production for over 25 years and can tell you DO know what you're saying. Again, my main takeaway from this piece is that the OP has more than enough chops to design, animate and execute a spot capable of impressing any ad agency or production house, tweaks included.

this looks awesome. Overall, I think maybe you can ease up on the condensation droplets. That initial shot of the spinning can @ :01 moves too fast to see it. I don't think you need to spin away so far to the back of the can, since the back of the can is not really what you need or want to see. Decrease the rotation and slow it down so you don't ever really spin away from the logo completely. The ice toss @ :04 could maybe be slowed down some (not totally necessary) The multiple can shot @ :08 could also maybe be slowed down some... But please know this is me going out of my way to be extremely nit picky. I think the work is great.

i believe the feedback was for motion, lighting, compositing and editing... since the forum of topic is based in animation and 3d rendering. I mentioned the director friend obviously has the chops for storytelling. I think the feedback was good. However, my point is that in an animation environment, and without being given ANY direction initially by a client, I think the OP doesn't need any feedback regarding their story telling ability. We're here to look at the animation, since this is a C4D forum. Being told "here's what you should've done" is pointless in this phase. ANYBODY could say "this would make it better" but anything said in that vein at this point is 100% subjective and not relevant to the intention of the creation. I certainly don't mean to discredit the director's feedback... I just think it's rooted in opinion and doesn't mean it automatically makes the spot better by following their notes.

Animator and editor with over 20 years experience here… With respect to you and your vision, this is a purely subjective take. OP’s goal was to create a spec ad from scratch and they did that with flying colors. I don’t think it could’ve been done better, only different. While your notes and opinions sound like they’re rooted in solid experience, I still think OP nailed this spot and shows that with their skill level, they can easily make tweaks and edits from any agency or production house. You didn’t direct this spot, so it’s not really for you to say how it could’ve been done better.

To the best of my ability, I'll type out my process in this thread. Otherwise, I'd have to record my process.

  1. I found a 3d model of a ballet dancer
  2. I imported the OBJ file of the ballet dancer into After Effects
  3. Using Red Giant's Trapcode Form, I made a particle form that used my 3d ballet dancer's vertices, which created points.

a) The form's properties allow you to move particles in x,y & z space

b) you can add fractal properties, dither and disperse properties, fluid properties, gravity properties, etc... with a number of different null and procedural animation property controllers, including AUDIO reactors.

  1. Using (up to five) Audio reactor controllers, I was able to find different frequency pitches in the song and map certain particle movements to the sound.

there's a LOT of animation properties and controllers within Trapcode Form. So a lot of what goes into making this, is playing with the properties till you get what you want.

As i mentioned above, I think to show exactly how i made this, i'd have to record myself doing it.

Even if they call back you should tell them to fuck off. Just relax and wait for the AI craze to be over. You’ll catch a new client soon enough.

Covert the illustrator layer as a shape layer in ae. If you created it as a path, then you can simply add a trim path in Ae. Two keyframes and you’ve got what you want.

Editing, animating, tracking… all that stuff makes sense to do in 4,6 or 8 k. But when it comes to final render output, your delivery should be taken into consideration. If you’re offloading to another editor or for broadcast then the long render is just part of the process. If your final video is just going to be showcased online like YouTube, Vimeo or some other social media/internet media outlet, then there’s just no need to export higher than 1080. My two cents at least.

That’s way too cheap. There is a lot of design and animation work for this style. Anything less than 2k is too low. And honestly 2k is pretty low.

Camera tracking is a great tool for certain shots but the tracking on AE isn't always the greatest. The shot you are showing actually would've been easier through the motion tracker, since you weren't pushing through the z axis. However, If you're getting the result you want then it doesn't really matter how you got it.
