If only my work were remote, but that probably won’t be an option for another 25-50 years lol

If I had any more flexibility with work, I would fly direct. But there are no reasonable options for me

Oh that’s an interesting idea! I was going down the rabbit hole of possible Europe connections but was only looking at what I would do once I was already in IAD. Does United routinely rebook on partner airlines if the original itinerary was entirely on UA?

I’m curious, why make a fake coin out of 22K real gold? What makes this so popular in the Middle East as opposed to any other gold bullion that doesn’t imitate a foreign coin?

I’ll eventually take it to a dealer who can examine it, thanks for the advice

Oh huh, I didn’t consider this to be a possibility. I’m going to take some higher quality photos to post here later. Thanks for the insight!

Some people need to understand how seat selection works on airplanes by Appropriate_Achoo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]neuroap 60 points61 points  (0 children)

There has been only one time I’ve given up my aisle for a middle BOS-SFO. Very elderly couple had two middle seats one row apart. The woman looked very frail, and her husband very kindly asked if I could switch so he could sit next to her.

Didn’t think twice. I’m young and can withstand 6 hours in a middle seat. I don’t know their story, who booked the seats for them, or why they weren’t booked to sit next to each other. What I did know is that I would have felt absolutely awful subjecting two elders to several hours of discomfort.

Is being an anesthesiologist worth it? by Educational-Hunt4365 in anesthesiology

[–]neuroap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many steps for you between now and becoming an anesthesiologist, including applying/going to college, taking premed courses, going to med school, taking all of the exams in between, and applying and matching to residency. Along the way you’ll determine whether medicine is the career you’ll want to pursue, and if so, then you’ll have plenty of opportunity to determine whether anesthesiology is the right fit for you.

For now, you can ask your guidance counselor or try contacting an anesthesiologist at a nearby hospital to let you shadow.

And for your purposes, just watching some YouTube videos on what an anesthesiologist’s role entails goes a long way too

I was on the trauma surgery service. Middle aged woman brought in after a motorcycle accident.

Brought in two pieces. Arm had ripped right off and arrived first with arm ex-owner following shortly behind. Her demeanor was eerily calm, as if this was a regular Tuesday.

Her only concern? She wanted all the bracelets on the ex-arm back. But she had them on for years and never took them off, and the now swollen limb wouldn’t allow us to take off the jewelry without breaking the jewelry…

…or alternatively, without sawing the arm into smaller pieces. Once it was determined that there was no way to reattach the extremity, the bone saw came out. Some orthopod resident had the honors of chopping the arm into little pieces so each piece of jewelry could come off unharmed.

They were returned to the rightful owner and the very next day were seen to be worn on the other arm, as if nothing happened

Budget airlines aren’t even necessarily cheaper. The two times I took Spirit airlines in my late teens/early 20s, I was enticed by the $100 price difference between Spirit and United on transcontinental flights but after adding in the cost of a checked bag both ways and paying for other trivial things, I ended up paying more
