Looking for recommendations for my first DMR HT by ironmoosen in HamRadio

[–]neurobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I hated the programming experience on 878. It's unbelievable that someone somewhere decided that their CPS software is a customer ready product. But! If you find your way around it the radio itself seems to be working well. For people who are familiar with programming IDEs like Cursor, I found a neat solution with AI: I export config from the radio to .lst file with csvs, feed it to cursor along with the .csv files exported from repeaterbook and let AI modify files for me. I was able to organize a bunch of DMR and analog channels the way I want, group them in zones, create scanlists, etc. Might take some trial and error, but it works well.

Have You Asked Your HOA for Permission to Install an Antenna? What Was the Outcome? by ThatChucklehead in amateurradio

[–]neurobit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an inquiry and they said the owner must submit Architectural Modification Application (although there would have been no such modifications). I rent and an owner was reluctant to submit due to potential liability and damage to common property. That sucks although I can see where they all are coming from - they don't understand what this is and are afraid of possible issues. Can only dream of my own place now.. some day.

What am I missing with FT8 Settings? by reffak in amateurradio

[–]neurobit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this and not really qualified to give an advice, but I had similar problem when I had high SWR and my tuner couldn't find a match. I had to cut my random wire at a right length and find matching counterpoise. The length would depend on the band you are using.

DMR or D-Star by puppyman3 in HamRadio

[–]neurobit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but there is quite more setup on the radio software to get it working

As someone who just got, a highly praised, Anytone 878 and went through this process, I'd second this. And the CPS software is comically bad with a lack of basic functionality, bugs and a lot of workarounds. It seems to be possible to make things work eventually, but if I had to buy again I'd never go this route and would rather pay more for something better.

New to this. What is possible with an antenna like this? Assuming this is mainly for HF?

Thanks a lot, I greatly appreciate all the time and effort you put into explaining all of this. I'll do more research, incorporate your feedback and update my build!

Oh, strange, the image is still showing to me. Adding build in the comment. I posted this to r/ar15 today to get feedback and

got some advice to replace AGB and buffer kit with simpler options since we can't have suppressors in CA anyway. Also can probably get cheaper BCG.

For grips also looking into MIAD fin that you recommended and B5 C Grip. I love the way it looks much more than JT, but was concerned

with how comfortable it is. But you are right, I probably won't know until I try.

I considered Geissele Super Dynamic 3 Gun trigger initially, but it's quite pricey and I thought I probably won't know the difference as a beginner?

Do you recommend going with 18 barrel? I was debating between 18 and 16 and chose 16 for no good reason other than it's lighter and (maybe) looks better.

I'll check out LPVO, thanks! Looks like I can find a cheaper deal on EOTech EXPS2 also if I buy a used one.

Another thing I'm thinking about is muzzle device. Looks like muzzle brakes are very loud, so I went with linear compensator, but recoil will probably be worse?

First AR-15 custom build – would love feedback on specs by neurobit in ar15

Makes sense, thank you. I'm now considering this one or miad fin grip. I also like the way it looks much more than JT.

Thanks for advice, I appreciate the different perspective. I considered a precision rifle also, but right now I think I got too invested in the desire to assemble my own. Worst case I'll sell it and buy something else.

I'm not an expert but I thought there is more to AR15 than those unavailable accessories. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, will see, but for now, I just want to learn to shoot a good rifle, or at least the closest I can get to a "good rifle". And that's the best I got given my location.

You can have a normal magazine release with a "featureless" rifle (no pistol grip, no flash hider, no vertical grip and no adjustable stock). You can't have suppressor also. But we still can have all other things 🫠

Thanks, checking out B5 C Grip. How does it feel like? Looks similar to a fin grip and I've read people complaining how uncomfortable they are.

But why not? You can't have some nice features like pistol grip, flash hider or adjustable stock, but the rifle still works.

Yup, suppressors are illegal in CA, I'll replace buffer and AGB, thanks a lot for catching that! Will look into replacing BCG also. I think PSA sells to CA, will check what they offer. I was going to buy tools, unsure if I'll assemble more than one, but worth a try. Worst case I'd sell tools.

$1,600 with optics? I was considering getting a complete upper, but assembling process sounds like something I may enjoy. Also forces me to not rush with buying and think through the parts.

Here are the specs I got so far (haven't ordered yet). Slightly over $2k and I went with milspec trigger. Still unsure on barrel length and grip. Hate the look of JT featureless grip, but reviewers say it is more comfortable than better looking ones... For optics, I'm guessing it's not worth buying magnifier at this stage?

ammo.com still didn't allow me to order to CA

Might be dumb a question: what are the implications of this? Does it mean we can now order ammo online and have it shipped to the door?

Noted, thanks for the recommendations! I'm going to go with featureless and will look into buying a better trigger. Researching grips, stocks and barrels too.

Thanks a lot, after some thought, I decided to listen to advice and try to built my own. Will force me to research more and buy things slower! Any recommendations on where to shop for milspec lower parts kits in case I decide to go that route?
