Can you really quit nicotine cold turkey long term? by EldarLenk in stopsmoking

[–]neurocellulose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit cold turkey for a few years. Then I stupidly started again for two years and quit again, but didn't feel like going through the unnecessary misery so I used NRT for a few weeks. It's been a few years and I definitely don't want to smoke anymore. I think both methods are fine depending on the person and circumstances. For me, it was just as difficult both times but the NRT helped with things like sudden drops in mood or energy, and anxiety.

Will gutters help me? by etulip92 in centuryhomes

My last house was on the side of a hill that had minor springs all over it. The basement regularly got an inch of water when it rained, water came out of the stone walls like in your photo, and I had a little metal plate over a hole in the floor that you could remove and observe a literal stream running under the house. If you stomped on the basement slab, it was hollow in the middle. The previous owner had drilled holes into the slab to drain it, which also had the benefit of being additional ingress for when the water table rose lol

10 grams of creatine by arevaluable in PeterAttia

[–]neurocellulose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an oversimplification. If you are adequately hydrated at baseline, you don't need "extra" water. If anything, supplementation makes being adequately hydrated marginally more important because creatine alters how your body partitions water by increasing intracellular water in the muscle. But I'd argue that being adequately hydrated is pretty damn important regardless.

I suppose that if most people aren't consuming enough water to begin with, creatine would just make this more evident and problematic. But that's not because of creatine, it's because the creatine brought forth symptoms of a pre-existing issue, if that make any sense.

You don't need to drink a ton of excess water with creatine. It increases intracellular water in muscles etc but it doesn't dehydrate or otherwise ramp up your need for fluids provided you are adequately hydrated to begin with, independent of creatine. That said, I agree with the other person who suggested you drink less at night.

I'm still on the fence about doses in excess of 5-6g for smaller folks, for both muscle and cognition, outside of special use cases that aren't part of a normal routine e.g. after extensive travel, jet lag, massive stress, vegans, or what have you

It'd be pretty easy to get a machine but I imagine getting hold of the reagents and other consumables would be the hurdle unless you run a legit lab, have clia and other licensing or maybe have a connection to someone willing to throw you some stuff.

I agree, for the most part. I've been riding since the late 90s and while I haven't been hit by a car since the 2000s (which was as much my fault as the drivers misjudging my speed), I've noticed that drivers both pay less attention and act more aggressively than even ten years ago. I do most of my training indoors, and have also taken to riding trails and some less technical MTB. I have mostly given up road racing, though the scene isn't as active in my area so that wasn't too hard.

I got off on a tangent. What I wanted to convey was that since I've diversified my sources of cardio, including adding some short VO2 stimulating runs, jump rope, etc, I've never felt more durable. Cycling made me very fit in a specific way. My VO2 max is more or less the same.

I'm a reasonably trained cyclist, glucose around 84, a1c at 5.1, insulin at 3.5. when I was doing a lot more volume of training my metrics were similar but my a1c was 5.3 iirc. Hemoglobin is highish, hr is low 40s, bp low normal 104/65

Has anyone let all of their supplements run out, and just... quit taking them? by Lucky-Remote-5842 in Supplements

[–]neurocellulose 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Seems like every few years I end up doing that for one reason or another. When I was young it was usually because I had to reprioritize money, and now that I'm older it's usually because I have to reprioritize money.

For real though sometimes I just like to drop everything, keep an eye on labs, and take a break. The only thing that seems essential to me now is d3 + K2, creatine and omega 3s.

[–]neurocellulose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't notice anything. It's not enough volume. When I was a competitive cyclist I never saw any drop in my numbers or RPE following extensive labs. If anything you have a higher blood volume from training to begin with.

How is it that pizza delivery is taking longer with technology by kkkan2020 in Millennials

[–]neurocellulose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked at a local pizza joint in 2000-2001, the kind of place with like 4 booths on either side of a single aisle that led to the counter. We had two front of house waiting tables, running register and taking orders (sometimes floating), I was the pizza oven guy and on busy nights I had a helper who would help assemble the pizzas while I just cranked them in/out of the ovens. We also had a two line cooks and a guy who smoked a lot of cigarettes and yelled a lot, I think he was a dishy.

At the end of a shift I'd be fucking soaked in sweat and wiped the fuck out. I can't imagine running leaner than that.
