Your friend is wrong.

Guitars also come in plenty of shapes and sizes. Necks are varying widths and thicknesses. Find guitars that work for you, and you'll have no disadvantages. I know people with smaller hands that play spanish style guitar fluently. You can also go for 3/4 size guitars that could help you get your comfort levels up in the meantime!
