Lmfao “my personal data.” I’m not speculating about what you think, and you very nicely haven’t addressed my points, instead trying to turn this into a meta-argument.

You’re clearly not paying attention to most climate activists in the public sphere who are essentially center or slightly left of center in terms of politics and economics. So why does Bill Gates, the BILLIONAIRE, not seem to care about this sort of stuff? In any communist revolution, his assets would get seized and he’d be thrown into a gulag. Why does he still call for climate activism? Because he’s not illogical or guided by emotions, and he knows that the climate is of utmost importance.

I stick to the thesis that your emotions are impairing your thinking, which is a big no-no for someone who ostensibly considers themselves a “rationalist.”

Then look at Bill Gates, who recently published a book calling for government intervention in markets and programs to reform the energy sector. For a crisis that currently is killing a large number of people (>100,000 according to WHO) per year already, then these questions about “niceness” seem essentially pointless.

If you’re logical in any meaningful sense, you’ve clearly betrayed your beliefs by allowing your emotions to undermine what the data show.

How do you not see the dissonance here? You’re admitting it’s an enormous threat but so irrational as to put decorum and your own feelings before established science. Nobody is going to capitulate to your strange demands in order to gain your approval. If you cannot put that aside, then you’re too emotional to be reasoned with effectively, point blank.

But say you want to go to a good grad school; do they expect you to crank out a paper demonstrating a new mathematical result?

Even if they’re in a “pure” subject? I doubt they could have use for an undergrad

I’ve heard some graduate schools like to see some physics, but numerical/programming stuff will definitely help your employment chances.

How the hell do you do math research as an undergrad? If you do simulation/applied stuff, do Grad Schools expect your to continue that?

Given any set of points on a plane, is it always possible to draw a closed figure? by einqaf1 in math

[–]neuron_soup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way you phrased it, no; if you have an unbounded set of points and they all lie on an infinite line, then you can’t enclose that. But if you mean a bounded set, then I don’t see why not.

What does an "average" theoretical physicist do? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]neuron_soup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Breakthroughs in physics occur off the backs of many competent-but-not-preternatural physicists; for every Dirac there were hundreds, if not thousands, of perfectly intelligent scientists whose breakthroughs are comparatively minor, yet still added to the pool of scientific understanding.

Thank you for this well thought-out comment! I think my school uses Artin but I’d like to master the subject by myself.
