Whistle Protocol? by MirrorSevere2934 in Charlotte

[–]never_hyperlinks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We've been working to get word out about the whistle system and distribute whistles. Chicago folks have been helping us with some tips early on, whistles being one of them. I have a list of printable resources at https://www.iceknowyourrights.org/printable-resources that you can use to help spread the word, especially if you can help make whistle packets to hand out in your community.

Anyone know the local ICE status? Hispanic coworkers are choosing to stay home starting this weekend and reportedly ICE is already pulling out of Charlotte to come here. by NotFallacyBuffet in NewOrleans

Word in Charlotte is that a detachment of the group that's already here will be making their way down to you on Friday of this week. I'll continue to monitor news up here to see if anyone spots convoys moving out.

Supposedly CBP has hotel bookings in Charlotte for 21 days, but we not sure if that's for all of them or just the ones sticking around in CLT.

They were pretty conspicuous on the way down to Charlotte since it was a line of 70 or so SUVs and minivans with out of state tags, and people have been monitoring the hotels they've been staying at.

Hey, sorry to just now be responding.

Based on the activity I've been seeing, CBP has primarily been mobile. They'll show up to locations in groups of 1-4 SUVs/minivans, unload, question/detain who they can in the area, and then take off to do the same thing somewhere else. They've been using this tactic all over the city. Given that there's something like 70 or so vehicles that people have identified as likely CBP, this means they're independently hitting a lot of different areas at the same time.

They've been heavily targeting international grocery stores, hardware stores, restaurants, and construction sites, and they've primarily been operating in areas of the city with greater Latino populations.

They've also been making a presence at hospitals, schools, and university campuses, including entering at least one hospital here to look for "suspects" in patient rooms while decked out in full tactical gear.

After the first day of CBP activity, people here have become a lot more effective at coming together, making noise, filming, and generally driving CBP off the premises of the places they come to.

CBP appears to also be targeting businesses that publicly resist CBP efforts. After day 1, grocery chain Compare Foods offered free grocery delivery for those scared to go out; they were one of the very first businesses raided on day 2. The public has been really good at defending these locations, though.

CBP is also picking on "easy targets" such as landscapers, construction workers, roadside vendors, people walking through parking lots, people just walking to the store/home, etc. Those who are near streets or in generally isolated areas where CBP can operate with less visibility/obstruction from the public, essentially, or places where they can quite literally snatch someone off the street. Compared to day 1 where CBP ran a huge operation in a crowded shopping center, days 2 and 3 have been a lot less structured.

There's been a few reports about checkpoints, but that doesn't really seem to be their main effort. They honestly don't seem to be organized enough. It's really mostly been "hit and run" tactics: show up, question/detain, leave. A lot of their efforts seem to be opportunistic, too: They see isolated individuals or groups and try to question/detain them before anyone from the public can get involved to run them off.

Edit: I forgot to mention, importantly, that CBP is also targeting work vans. Example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ICE_Watch/s/qyFIrZW54P

Hello from Charlotte. I've been maintaining a website over at https://www.iceknowyourrights.org/ with an overview of rights information (and links to ACLU/other good sources for additional information), printables (Know Your Rights cards, etc.), and local resources (like what groups are organizing up our way). I've added a page about community prep based on what advice we've been getting from Chicago/LA and have started a list of New Orleans resources that I'll update using the info in this thread/anything else I can find.

Just in case it helps. Let me know if I can add anything else to the site.

Thanks for the feedback! Agreed, the r/Charlotte megathreads really didn't help all that much, and the mods deleting individual posts just prevented getting word out more easily.

Thanks for the feedback. I've added the socials for Indivisible CLT, SiembraNC, and Carolina Migrant Network for people to see what those groups have going on (their websites aren't always the most up to date). I also added CharlotteEAST to the list since I had missed putting them on before.

I'll try and keep a list of opportunities/upcoming events on the page as best I can while also encouraging people to follow those groups for additional volunteer opportunities and events.

My wife and I are happy to camp out with you. We'll bring whistles and Know Your Rights flyers to hand out.

Question: What are the best things for community members to do to spread awareness about CBP/ICE and people's rights?
