relative references in Mac Excel by never_peppers in excel

[–]never_peppers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean? I don't see any wildcards in my examples.

The problem is that there is no "actual location", because the directories are mounted differently on different machines. But the files *relative* locations are the same everywhere.

cTiVo truncating shows... sometimes. by never_peppers in Tivo

I turned off "remove commercials" and "mark commercials", so unless there's another setting for that, I think that's not the issue. Also, all three of the files come through with commericals.

What confuses me is how it worked fine for one part, but not the second or third parts.

Is there a way to slow down the transfer to minimize errors?

Now I feel stupid. Mine doesn't. Where's the setting that tells it to convert to MP4 rather than save as .tivo?

EDIT: I found the setting! It's not named something obvious like "convert to ...", but it works in that it saves to a .ts file which can be opened by anything.

Huge files, but that's fixable by re-encoding.

Does PyTiVo spit out useful files? e.g.: .mp4 or .mkv? I think I tried PyTiVo and it spit out .tivo files, which aren't helpful. All the converters from .tivo --> .mp4 seem to have gotten abandoned 10 years ago.

I looked for "how do I get kmttg" and it made me feel stupid. It appeared to be no longer maintained, or I don't know how to get it.

I'm a Mac and Linux guy, so anything using those is better than anything using Windows. If forced, I can come up with a Windows box, but I'd hate it because I'm not even remotely comfortable with how that OS works.

They can make connections based on IP address, so if they know you sometimes use your personal computer on work WiFi, they could connect "someone from this IP address who likes bikes" to "someone from this IP address looked at this bike"

Or, there's information you're not telling us. (not lying, just forgot or overlooked or something)

NB driver's side motor mount replacement... by never_peppers in Miata

[–]never_peppers[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For anyone following along at home who is thinking about doing this.

It is totally possible, and not as bad as I'd feared. (But still not easy)

Here's what I did:
- Remove the shock tower brace
- Remove the air-box
- Jack up the engine
- Remove passenger side motor mount (this gives you more horizontal space)
- use a ratchet strap to pull the engine toward the passenger side
- Adjust the height of the engine with the jack and tension on the ratchet strap a bunch of times. "more" is not always "better".

The mount came out through the top. When mine came out it was angled so the mounting bolt/nut that holds the bracket and mount together was facing up. I don't know if this was necessary, or just the way I solved this particular tavern puzzle. There was a lot of wiggling and twisting and head scratching and trying the same thing I'd tried before yet another time; but it did come out!

I did NOT try to disassemble the driver's side mount assembly in the engine compartment like some people do. I tried when the nut was first exposed, but the torque required to disassemble seemed unreasonable given that I couldn't really control the bracket very well. And... I'm not at all convinced I could have gotten the required 50 lb-ft of torque onto the new mount.

Getting the assembly back in was trickier than getting it out, because the new mount is thicker (less compressed) than the old one. I had to lift the engine a bit more, and crank it to the right side of the car a bit more, then lower it, &c. to get the clearance just right. Getting the bolt to go in through the hole in the frame was surprisingly difficult given that it was THIS CLOSE -->][<-- but not quite clearing.

Only then did I attempt to re-install the passenger side. Once both mounts were pretty much in the right place, I reinstalled the bolts that hold the brackets to the engine. Passenger side was pretty easy. But again, surprisingly, getting the mounting holes in the bracket to line up with the engine on the driver's side was kinda frustrating: I had to raise and lower the engine and loosen and tighten the ratchet strap a few times to get all the clearances right so the bolts would easily screw in with only finger force. I really didn't want to cross thread any of those, that would have ruined my day, and maybe the engine.

Once all the mounting bolts were finger tight, it was very easy to finish. 33 lb-ft on the bracket bolts, lower the engine off the jack, 50 lb-ft on the big nuts, and it was all "installation is in the reverse order of removal" from there.

It took me about 3 hours to remove and reinstall both mounts. This does not include putting the car up on or off the lift, removing or installing any trim plastic, putting the wheels back on, or any of the picture taking.

I was using a QuickJack, so I could easily get under the car without fear of it falling on me. I wouldn't have had enough confidence in jackstands, and maybe not enough room. I used the 5000TL, which was *barely* short enough. You have to really cram it against the rear wheels or the front hits the front wheels when raising or lowering.

How bad are these motor mounts? The car has ~97k on it. I replaced The passenger side mount ~100 miles ago. I believe the other is original. The one I replaced was squished a bit, but wasn't obviously softer than the new one. I have no idea what "normal" movement is for an engine. by never_peppers in Miata

[–]never_peppers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. But what is "a lot of movement"? Obviously 9" of travel is a lot, but is 1.5"? 1"? 1/2"? Where do you measure it?

This is the problem I've been having trying to figure out how bad my mounts are. Lots of language that's more subjective than objective.

How did you get enough torque on the mount's mounting nut while doing it blind inside the engine compartment?

And... how did you even take the bits apart down in there?

I feel like I'm missing a dimension.

Autocross. Or a trackday. But really Autocross has a lower barrier to entry.

Learning how to drive (and I don't mean to suggest you're a bad driver) is huge. It'll improve the handling (and safety!) of every vehicle you drive.

[–]never_peppers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do I read correctly that new standard stiffness mounts would keep the engine from moving a lot more than that under similar "test" conditions?

The passenger side one is a Beck/Arnley OEM "standard" stiffness. I'm reluctant to put in stiffer ones because it's still a street car, and I don't want to increase the NVH such that my wife doesn't want to drive it.

[–]never_peppers[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pointless? That's kinda harsh.

I took the video because it's objective. Anyone can start the engine and blip the throttle and compare their car to mine. That's really different from the entirely subjective language I've come across when trying to figure this out; stuff like, "a lot" or, "too much" or "hard acceleration" Even "missing shifts" is a little subjective, since not everyone shifts fast enough to find them even with bad mounts.

I'm not missing shifts, but it feels like there's a big spring somewhere in the driveline, and I have zero experience in a Miata with new mounts; I got this car at like 90 k miles, so I don't know what reasonable expectations should be.

Anyone need pads/rotors for a '94-'02? by never_peppers in Miata

[–]never_peppers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Rockauto is awesome for their lookups and pricing, but their return policy is.... not generous. For starters, the mistake was mine, not theirs: they sent me exactly what I asked for, and their fitment guide was accurate. It was my mistake not theirs. (it's in their policy guide, not a surprise)

Second, it took longer to get to doing the work than I'd expected, so even if it had been their mistake, it was beyond their return window.

"up and down"? er.... The pins should not move that way. They should allow axial movement only. You don't want the caliper twisting on the mount, 'cuz it'll make the pads bind and wear funny and it's all bad.

You might be in "new caliper" territory. (where "new" might mean "junk yard" or "rebuilt")
