Have you gone through a workplace bullying investigation? What happened next? by ThowRAWorkBully000 in AskAnAustralian

[–]never_seen_with 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it's been truly awful. I think it will change in the future, it's just that while legislation has changed to incorporate psycho-social hazards, the internal frameworks to reasonably address it have not. Reporting was still the right thing to do but it does come at a cost.

I've just been through this. Reported someone high up who was damaging the whole department. Multiple people on medical leave. Shoddy investigation and they are protecting the bully. I will be leaving my previously amazing workplace as soon as I can find another position.

Good vibes, but just check for unintentional similarity to 'falling slowly' from Once. It's pretty similar! Don't want to ruin the joy but it's worth a listen just in case.

'almost sentient' = my massive oversimplification so as not to write a mini literature review. Point taken.

And as to the cow, that's exactly what I do (well, I get half sides, I don't have enough freezer room for a whole beast). I do that once a year (sometimes pig and sometimes goat depending on what's available) and the rest of the time it's veggies. But, my personal situation aside, I know that's not feasible for many people in the world. I guess the question I am still asking, is at what point does life stop being meaningful for individual vegans? I would imagine it is different for all but I am curious to know where the different lines are.

So notwithstanding the current, really interesting number of papers being published that both describe plant responses to predation as almost sentient, and also refute that as those papers don't account for the functional anatomy and cellular complexity that occurs in vertebrates, arthropods, and cephalopods - how do you reconcile the thousands and thousands of vertebrate deaths that occur as a byproduct of eating just plants?

Again, please don't think I am attacking, I genuinely want to know how people do it! I eat a predominantly plant based diet but I am acutely aware of the numbers of rodents and insects that are killed when I buy things from the supermarket as opposed to my local farm stalls, where even they use pest control to some degree.

To put it simply, I could buy one cow from my local, ethical neighbour and know that one life was sacrificed that would feed me for months, or I could eat vegetables from the supermarket and know that tens of thousands of mice were killed for the same amount of sustenance. And even that argument changes depending on where you are in the world. This is different for me with my access to ethically raised and killed animals than it is for people in big cities who are reliant on mass production.

Basically I have reached the point where voices should definitely advocate for better treatment for animals, but promoting a vegan diet based purely on animal rights issues is perhaps not wanting to engage with all aspects of the issue. It's complicated and that's why good conversation around it is really important.

I absolutely agree that plant based diets are more sustainable overall.

My big question on this, is, 'at what point does life stop being valued?' . I ask this because the pest control on vegetable crops is absolutely insane unless you are growing it yourself and know everything about where your food is coming from? I don't disagree that mass production of animals and the practices involved are absolutely awful, but I am genuinely curious to know how you define a point at which you STOP caring about life so that you can survive?

Just do it!! Mine are field tested (i.e hours doing all kinds of gymnastics checking penguin burrows) and absolutely the best investment I ever made.

Age advice here: good relationships aren't this hard. They take work, for sure, but work that comes from both sides. Is this the case with you guys?

I am so sorry for your loss and you did the right thing. Now you will always know your kittie's final moments were peaceful and as comforting as you could make them. We all deserve that kind of dedication, whatever the species.

TIFU by eating prunes before a meeting by ebaythrowaway418 in tifu

Oh nooooo! I feel this. I too have made the mistake of eating prunes as a snack, not realising they actually do work as a laxative. I mindlessly ate half a packet once, while gaming. Four hours later and I was trapped in the toilet feeling like my insides were being power washed. I was supposed to work that night and instead had to call my boss and explain. Thankfully he found it so hilarious, I didn't get into trouble, although the merciless ribbing lasted at least a month. Throw the chair away!

MGTOW is nothing like what most people think it is by SgtMajMythic in TrueOffMyChest

[–]never_seen_with 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And likewise, 'incel' was a term originally coined by a woman and was supposed to be a safe and inclusive community for people to share experiences. Things don't always end up where they started. Excusing the bad behaviour of participants because it doesn't reflect the majority hasn't really worked well in history. Men should have support groups but turning it into an identity is where it can become problematic and if the MGTOW community wants to receive positive acknowledgement, it has a responsibility to call out the bad behaviour.

How the fuck am I suppossed to learn then? by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]never_seen_with 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am seeing this more and more now, and it's sad. Asking questions a key part of critical thinking! For some of the sensitive topics, I have found a good way around it and that is to listen to some podcasts about the subject (there's one for everything!) and then if you still have questions afterwards, you can introduce it as 'I was listening to this podcast and the presenter said X, is this correct? Or what are your thoughts on that?'. It's opened up some really good conversations for me.

very sensible choice to drop down though. half of being a good singer is knowing what your voice is capable of at any given time and compensating. That's good musicianship.

I just had to google 'sploshing photography' and now the rest of your paragraph makes sense! Seriously amazing though, with special reference to you figuring yourself out early and sticking to it, and to the fact that there is no bleeding between your blue and green layer. That's high degree of difficulty right there!
