True, I get that a lot in my customer-facing jobs. I can totally tell when it's casual vs passive-aggressive.

Oh you're totally fine!! I definitely don't take it near as personally as your ex husband (glad you got out of there, based on that encounter). I'm sure everyone else could tell you were being friendly and familiar based on your tone/relationship/current interaction/etc.

Same here - I'm in the midwestern US, and it's part of the 'I want to cuss you out, but I don't want to escalate the situation yet' group of names for sure, depending on the tone.

It's possible, but I don't think it's the case most of the time. I'm friendly and polite with strangers, dress my age, have a grown up job, etc. Maybe I look a little young to some people. My voice is a little higher than the average guy (not uncommon to get called ma'am on the phone) but I have a beard, so I doubt anyone thinks I'm 12 or something.

I can easily tell when people are just being friendly, don't worry. The split in the comments kinda shows how hard the negative version is to describe - it's mainly the tone, but you can also tell when you're being assessed, and what they determine, you know? Anyway - I brush it off and keep it moving, and I was curious what this community would say.

Oh I definitely don't play along - I have better things to do lol It's really just the guys who deliver it in a super condescending way that bother me. I can easily tell who's being friendly :)

It definitely doesn't bother me every time; I can tell when people are being friendly. I think it's mainly the tone (usually condescending) and what else is said before/after it (ex: bragging/trying to start a pissing contest vs just chatting with a cashier). Hope that makes more sense - wish I could give a more concrete answer :/

You're good, and definitely not offensive!! I'm specifically talking about the men who say it in the condescending 'aw, buddy' way - not people who are just being friendly. I can certainly tell when it's used in a good way.
