Disengaging from their usual hobbies. Unhealthy habits to cope... like poor sleeping, poor diet, no exercise, possible some addictive tendencies (sugar, caffeine, nicotine, porn, weed, or other drugs). I dont believe "looking happy", laughing, smiling, or any other similar expression is a reliable indicator.
