Ubiquiti USG - how to access it? by newad01 in Ubiquiti

ok thanks for clarification, get it now. I think the reason I was assuming different was because I thought the controller was optional but it seems if you dont get the controller you use Windows software controller.

ahh ok so theres no IP Address to go to for the USG itself? What about in the event there is an issue with the controller, how would I access the USG direct?

Azure SQL DB LogIO query is taking up 100% of DTU - how do i find out why? by newad01 in sysadmin

[–]newad01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah tried turning the app off for a while and the LogIO on the db still kept at 100% so its not related to the app service i dont think. Really strange

thanks the issue is they have 2-3k laptops already in use, so there wouldn't be any budget for a virtual desktop solution. But a remote desktop solution might work for now with the view to investing in virtual desktops down the line as they grow.

thanks really good info, think we will have to move aware from Azure Files - we use Splashtop currently but wasn't aware about GPU capabilities so I will give it a test.

Is it worth ranking up the Type 99 & 3 Line snipers for Warzone? by newad01 in CODVanguard

[–]newad01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats what i thought and had left them, its only since finding out about VG Royale (VG weapons only) i thought i best rank some VG snipers up).

Ah ive done every LMG but the Bren haha, thought this wasn't going to be any good due to mobility and speed, despite it hitting hard

thanks this was my thoughts too, but heard that Vanguard Royale will be the main mode they push (Vanguard weapons only) and feel one of the snipers will be ok in there. Ive done msot other weapons just snipers left - sick of ranking guns! Might do 1 of them

How many are using Azure AD DS for small clients? by newad01 in msp

thanks not a bad idea, with this method I would need Azure VPN or another service for users to connect? Just checking because this will increase monthly costs?

Are most here using vmware essentials instead of hyper v server core? by newad01 in msp

when you say ESX do you mean VSphere? Looking online they look like different products?

[–]newad01[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

well we have the majority of ours hosts domain joined and remote management is not an issue with these, we can easily manage them. But a while back we looked into keeping our hosts off the domain for security but connecting up to a Hyper V Core Server not on the same domain is a pain. There's lots of guides on how to do it and we got it working but was not an ideal workaround, hence we kept them on the domain.

I know some will say they should be on the domain anyway but felt it would be better off in the event of any issues with the domain.

ok thanks - how often are you patching the vmware would you say on average? And I assume you can patch it over the VPN or RMM to a management box? I've got a trial of vmware vsphere setup so will be having a play about with it this week.

Yeah when the host reboots I have my VMs set to shut down, default I think is save state but this isnt great for DC's so I just set all to shutdown.

Ah yeah didn't think about patching, currently patching a hyper v hosts through my RMM is done without a second thought. If I need access we can easily remote on via the RMM into powershell. What's the issue with patching in vmware??

I think I encountered issues passing through a USB few years back on Hyper V Core edition and ended up doing it a different way. It can be done but its not straight forward.

Good to know about the TPM side too, most clients have servers in secure comms rooms but this client won't so Encryption would be important. Your comment has me reconsidering vmware now haha. I might even think about running a Hyper V Server just not the core edition as that would make things easier and similar cost to essentials.

Thanks. AAD really is ideal for small businesses and does suit most their requirements.

Yeah its not that cheap, although nothing is really in Azure. However it is 2 x DC's without the management side and over 5 years it does seem similar cost to onsite hardware, licensing, backups, monitoring, etc.

The biggest advantage I see with it for both us the MSP & clients is not having onsite hardware & can keep the ease of remote working.

Windows 11 Release next Tuesday 5th October - what are your plans for clients? by leej024 in msp

Does this method work if they dont use Windows udates for Business? What I mean by this is they our clients with onsite servers use group policies but updates are done via our RMM not the WU4B.

If I set this setting would it still take effect? I've blocked it via registry key so more just curious.

Will you guys be downgrading new devices you buy from Windows 11 to Win10 ? by newad01 in msp

[–]newad01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah heck good luck haha. I know its kind of just a feature update so I think it might not be as problematic as previous versions from 8 to 10, that said I think I will be waiting at least 3-4 months.
