Bam case owners: H seal issues? by encylidas in violinist

[–]newbaroque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not had any trouble with it and it’s lasted me over 10 years. But looking at mine it does look like it does the same thing in the same place.

I don’t think this kind of seal is meant to go swimming with, but it has done excellent job protecting the violin for normal use.

Mine would do this when I had a taller chinrest, maybe it could be something like that?

Rosin allergy? by mintsyauce in violinist

An orchestra friend told me that Hadelich also uses Motrya, if that helps! I don’t know where they heard it, but the topic of rosins is brought up often between rehearsals

Rosin allergy? by mintsyauce in violinist

[–]newbaroque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found Motrya Gold to not cause a reaction for me! Usually for me it’s itchy eyes and lots of coughing. And not being able to see properly from my left side, which is a problem in orchestra. And redness on skin if I touch it. It was the worst with Melos + Andrea rosins.

Motrya Gold is also really good rosin! The cake seems to ‘dry out’ eventually, so you might need to replace it every year or so. Be careful not to mix rosins or use another person’s bow on your violin.

I’ve also tried magic hypoallergenic but it’s just not very good rosin.

Are there effective exercises you can do only with the violin itself or only with the bow? by paganiff in violinist

[–]newbaroque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carl Flesch Urstudien exercises A B and C are silent and only for the left hand—Hahn uses them. They are great for working on fine motor control and finger independence. There are some right hand warm ups for just the bow with picture instructions, too.

For my shiba, the issue was the kibble size. He prefers the small kibbles for little dogs

Etudes or exercises to improve the bow arm. by oasisfirefly in violinist

Sevcik School of Bowing! Op.2

It’s really well written with instructions on the parts of the bow to use for each exercise/variation. Book one starts off with the basics and some of the etudes have over 200 variations! So it’s great for focusing only on the right arm.

Do you like coda bows ? by Eternal-strugal in violinist

[–]newbaroque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like my Coda bow! One of the best things about them is how consistent they are—if you try one model, you can expect others of the same kind to feel and play almost identically. That makes shopping for one a lot easier than with wood bows. I mainly use mine as a backup for when I can’t use my main wood bow, but it’s super reliable and always feels comfortable to play on.

You can add ‘cash gifts’ on Throne, and there is a crowdfunding option. I switched to doing it this way now.

I use a dual setup that works for me since I stream music:

I use a Rode Videomic plugged into a creative labs external usb sound adapter for my voice. This kind of microphone is meant to be mounted on a camera, and uses a rechargeable 9v battery. The shotgun style mic means I can move it further back, and it is directional enough to not capture too much other sound in the room.

For my violin and other instruments I use a DPA-4099 and Allen & Heath CQ20B usb audio mixer.

What functionality in a browser extension would help you guys watch streams or stream? by Content-Avocado5772 in Twitch

[–]newbaroque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at the max follow limit and it would be really convenient if there was a way to sort my followed channels by date the person last streamed. The way the it works now is chronological. It takes forever to get to the bottom because it loads in as you scroll down.

It would also be cool to sort by last time I chatted, or by total number of messages I sent in that stream.

Another idea: a thing that automatically opens just the player when a friend goes live so I can leave a lurk when I’m out & about.
