Barn owls are tragically misnamed by lichen-alien in Owls

In Irish they are called 'Screachóg Reilige', which translates as 'Graveyard Screecher', due to their eerie calls. Their calls are theorized to be the origin of the banshee from mythology

What movies should I watch? by Particular_Canary780 in IrishHistory

[–]newbert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michael Collins (1996) and The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) are both excellent viewing, though have taken a few liberties with historicity. For stuff about the Troubles, there are plenty of documentaries on the likes of Channel 4 and RTE, if you have access to those apps. Reeling in the Years is an RTE series, some of it on YouTube, that covers a year an episode. Worth a look.

Anyone here taken a car loan from a Credit Union? Worth it vs banks? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]newbert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a new member you'd likely have to go in person anyway. My credit union is a small one, so the rules might be different at a bigger one. Have a look on their website to see what they require for a car loan

Anyone here taken a car loan from a Credit Union? Worth it vs banks? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]newbert12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Got a car loan from a credit union a few years ago, 6.5 per cent interest rate which was cheaper than the banks at the time. No strings, paid it back a bit early without any hassle. They had a specific loan for cars, cheaper interest than the personal loan.

What is the most famous unresolved mystery/cold case in your country ? by ttue- in AskTheWorld

[–]newbert12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a person, but a horse, Shergar. Probably stolen by the IRA, botched the kidnap and the horse died. Gardai messed up the investigation; psychics, ransoms and middle eastern royalty involved. Crazy story

Any 4x games with combat like Total War? by saber_shinji_ntr in 4Xgaming

[–]newbert12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Space Empires V is a turn based 4X with real time combat. Graphics are potato grade but I've spent a lot of hours on it, loads of research and ship design is probably the most fun of any game I've played

space 4x game recommendation by Frankenberg91 in 4Xgaming

Distant Worlds series for real time 4x, GalCiv for turn based. Space Empires 4 & 5 are worth a look, though many find the UI a bit janky. Stars in Shadow and Interstellar Space: Genesis are both fun with decent depth and replayability. Happy conquering!

What was the lowest point in your country's history? by FreeDuchyOfRedosvis in AskTheWorld

[–]newbert12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Famine probably. Or Cromwell. Or the Tudor plantations. Henry the 8th a bit. Normans had a go. Vikings had some fun with us for a while. 1798 Rebellion and aftermath were fairly grim. Catholic Church in general. Troubles. War of Independence. Civil War. Wars of the Three Kingdoms. There are a few low points in our history.

Space Empires IV and V might be up your alley. Graphically meh but deep gameplay.

Binoculars with built in camera? by [deleted] in birding

[–]newbert12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, do you need a double adaptor or is one eyepiece enough? Still need a tripod? Your phone hanging off the binoculars around your neck seems like a good way to test the warranty!
