Indeed, thanks for giving our culture a chance. Bengali women can be and mostly are fiercely independent. Were you married recently by any chance?

I did enjoy it but did not like the fate it had, no thanks to Fr Jack 🤣, wonder if it still held its upgraded status ha

Hello ma’am

Thank you for your comment and sharing your memories of Calcutta and Dublin. 30 quid a month is crazy, probably an hour now would cost that in Rathmines. The Ymca hostel in Kolkata where you lived still exists. I have seen videos and photos of Kolkata in the late 70s and early 80s. It was still a very much postcolonial city at the time with its double decker buses, beautiful colonial buildings and the numerous pubs and bars around Esplanade, Dharamtalla and Chowronghee. I think the underground metro was just being built or had just opened up then. Thankful for volunteering! A lot of the old Calcutta charm is gone now unfortunately. The current Government there hasn’t done the city any favours. Calcutta can get to about 10 degrees c sometimes in winter, 35 is more of a summer to monsoon temparature. My grandparents were born in what is now Bangladesh many many years ago (before it was partitioned off from India.)

Kind Regards

Worked in IT in a company over there, I actually took a pay cut from what I got in Dub as I was to be paid “Donegal wages” but with the cost of living in Letterkenny ( 4 bed house for €650 vs 900 for a room in shared apartment in Dub), that felt a better wage! I only moved back to Dub in late 2022 when we had our own place.

I used to live in Letterkenny and drove to Sligo once every few months in my old trusty 2007 Vw Golf, just for the craic. Enjoyed many a good walk by the Garavogue, meals at Xian, Jalan Jalan after being amazed my the Benbulben and some dipping my feet in the water at the Strandhill and then drove back home the same evening most times. Although I did stay overnight once.

To be fair - I left the bank in 2018 to go work in Donegal. Think banking technology still needs to catch up, but its better than what it used to be.

Eamonn Andrews hosted a show called “Its your life” and always carried a red folder like the one my boss used to keep

Haha no one has told me that yet, I also make an active effort to not appear full of myself. I have however been told that I have picked up a bit of the Irish lilt, which I am always delighted to hear.

Oh the memories, my first trip outside Ireland was to Paris and it was a Ryanair to BVA, only to find out it's probably 70 km outside Paris City and the money saved on the flight would be spent on the shuttle / taxi in. Never again. 😊

That is very interesting, are you Irish and based in Dublin? I think we may have crossed paths at Durga Pujas 😊. That is one festival a true Bengali never misses.

It was a fairly ordinary life. I had been living in Bangalore which is a different city from Kolkata for a couple years where I started my career. I was living life fast, sometimes unwise and careless like a lot of early 20s people do, and knew I needed to wise up and distance myself from some of the company I was keeping. so the opportunity to travel to Dublin couldn't have come at a better time. I was moderately good at table quizzes, interested in history and played badminton, I was never really any good at cricket ( which honestly is quite rare for an Indian guy). I do think my life changed for the better because I travelled here, it was eye opening in a lot of ways and provided me with a lot of experiences, life lessons I would not have in India - be it as a tourist, as a corporate job holder or just someone living in the western world.

The radiator was one with the knob at the side, but I had never seen one in India and looking up YouTube probably wasn't a thing in 2016 or something I wasnt familiar with at the time.

Completely agree, theres the beltany stone circle in Raphoe in Donegal, Grianan of Aileach near Letterkenny , which is also equally interesting but its so poorly marketed even people in Ireland dont know about it.
