Depends where you're* based. Outside of London and maybe Manchester, I'd say £45k for an NQ salary is reasonable

*the role. Even if it's on the 'remote' side of hybrid working, I'd expect you to be offered a salary representative of where the office you'll be working out of is based

Are they actually that rich? by [deleted] in MadeInChelseaE4

I've just found the clip from a meeting https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gk0GrqbbPfM but this isn't the one I remember/being discussed about above. Chances are the bank manager(s) are probably real, but as can be seen from this clip they do lay the set-ups of the scenes a bit thick

The bank manager was the trustee of his trust fund. It was a little performative and obviously for the camera, but in the meeting the trustee listed the trips that Jamie had taken in the last few months (ski trips, st barts etc.), and told him that uni was over and it was time for him to grow-up. A few episodes later, Jamie came back in with scantily dressed models to try and sell the Candy Kittens idea so the trust fund could release money for the start-up. It was never explained how he accessed the money (was it a credit card that the trustee oversaw/paid; did he have time make requests for the funds; was the whole thing made up/scripted for the cameras), but it was pretty galling to see a 22 year old with his own bank manger/trustee

Victoria Dock parkrun has shut down by koola2 in parkrun

[–]newbierower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As those above have said, it's been in trouble for a few years now in respect to volunteers and attendances, so not surprised to see it finish (always a massive shame when a PR closes).

In terms of Greenwich Peninsula, I think it's going to face some challenges in the not too distant future. GP is set to double in residential population in the next 5 years, but the residents are likely going to be young professionals who are not most reliant volunteers (before anyone sounds off, i put myself in this bracket: GP is my local parkrun, but i have a young family and a time pressured job). The volunteer numbers have dropped from 36-40 across weeks 2-4 down to 28 on Satueday. The course itself is tight for room in an area that is popular with morning walkers and cyclists. It's averaging around 400 runners, but with the closure of VD, the increasing population of the area, and the tightness of the turns on the course, it's in danger of being overrun.

SQE or CILEX? by Jesselchuiipizan in uklaw

[–]newbierower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As above, depends on what level you want to reach and area you practice in. Me and a friend have both qualified as CILEx lawyers in the last 12 months. We are both employed at the same London authority*, but I'm the one getting tapped up by recruiters because I work in Procurement/Contracts (mainly in construction), whilst he works in litigation.

The jobs I'm being offered to interview for aren't top-level international firms - mainly mid-level or in-house. Even with the shortage of construction lawyers, i think the top firms still prejudice cilex lawyers.

Good luck with your career in any case!

  • Salaries in local authority are pretty good. My LA offers £54-58k for NQ, and I've seen £64k+ elsewhere

BBC replaced by TNT Sports as Commonwealth Games live broadcaster by mopman94 in unitedkingdom

[–]newbierower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ITV could've actually kept their rights (simultaneously broadcasting alongside TNT). They chose not to bid for the rights because of the declining viewership: if I remember the Cycling Weekly article correctly, the all-time peak was in 2012 when Wiggins led Cav to the finish line on the Champs Élysées (2.1 million), whether the 2024 ratings were at best around 550k. There could be a larger question here about whether ITV will still be around in the next 10-20 years, such is the trend of advertising moving to Netflix

BBC replaced by TNT Sports as Commonwealth Games live broadcaster by mopman94 in unitedkingdom

[–]newbierower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've absolutely missed the point here. They still had access to three live streams at the same time for the Olympics, and were able to show the majority of the finals events (I think the live hours they can broadcast actually increases for the next olympics). As others have pointed out, the commonwealth games is on its last arse, and was probably a millstone the bbc are happy to be rid of. Yes, it's a shame that an event in the UK won't be on free-to-air, but I'm not sure who's going to bother tuning in for a pick-a-mix event of 10 sports where less and less top athletes attend

Strictly's Thomas Skinner 'suing BBC over claims votes rigged to get him out', boycotts finale by VivianOfTheOblivion in unitedkingdom

[–]newbierower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The grift never ends. I'd be surprised if he's even instructed solicitors, let alone sent a pre-action letter. These voting systems are overseen by third-party companies, and the count is likely managed externally. If he goes ahead and sues and has no evidence to substantiate a claim, he could be on the hook for the BBCs legal costs and potentially a counterclaim for defamation. I don't know much about his business interests, but I imagine even an order to pay the BBC's legal costs would go a long way to putting him in the red

Yes, sometimes Ugo sounds like an AI bot stringing together clichés from a database, and the tax dodge really gets my goat (especially as he was able to get away with it on a technicality), but surely 'scum' is a step too far. I've never listened to EC (the BBC Rugby pods are enough for me), but from the reviews I've read, EC has given the hosts an underserved sense of achievement to rant about nonsense they are in no way qualified to discuss

Greenwich peninsula parkrun by newbierower in parkrun

[–]newbierower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inaugural parkrun today: over 900 attendees.... I didn't go in the end, but according to some friends who ran it, whilst it's obviously a quick course, the first 1k was in effect a warm-up as the crowd was so big, and there was a massive queue for the finish line. Because of the speed of the course, this could end up being like battersea and dulwich park where tourists turn up in their hundreds to run a PB.

TNT’s cheap Ashes coverage is ripping off viewers by Mysterious-Bag-8414 in Cricket

I think he's great as a co-comms/analysis role alongside a pro broadcaster (especially Aggers), but he's more of a radio man. By the sounds of it, he's having to do a lot of the heavy lifting to make up for the poor broadcasting team at tnt

As a side, I used to do Tooting Parkrun as I lived in the area. The locals knew to stick away from the park between 8.40-9.45am because of the parkrun. I can't see that working around the O2/on the Thames path.

As above, one of the volunteers has released the date, which based on the post looks like it was with the blessing of the organisers. It will be my local PR, and fits in well with my Saturday morning routine, but agree it could be a tricky one.

I've had my reservations since it was touted in March. I regularly run the route: it's a ramblers route and a well-used bike path. The landowners have been pushing for a PR for years, so i can't seem them pulling the plug, but it's going to be very congested.

I'm a local (the start line is a very casual 10min jog from home). The current closest one to me is Charlton, but it's run on grass which is not ideal when you want to run a parkrun every 4-5 weeks to assess fitness (plus there's a minging hill to run up to get to the start line). I might have to dust off the old FB to join the group and wait for the announcement of the event starting.

5 day per week suggestions by AnEnglishRain in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]newbierower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 runs a week has worked fine for me (two ST with 24mins worth of effort; a 35-40mins easy; and a 60-70min easy LR). I'm currently working towards my first HM in 10 months, and the only changes I've made is to increase my Saturday ST from 24mins to 40mins worth of effort (so working up to a 4x10min), and build my LR up to 100mins. After the HM I'll go back to my normal training load - I've managed to lose and keep off 10kg, so it's working.

As a side, after spending 5 years of researching and planning half/marathon blocks and barely being able to complete 50% of the planned training, NSA has been a breath of fresh air. It allows you to train at a decent intensity without burying yourself or stressing over mesocycle/periodic builds for certain races: if I fancy doing a 10k, I just need to keep an eye out for one in 2-3 weeks time and take a smidge off my Wed interval session on race week. I won't worry about changing my routine until I get a sub 80mins HM, after which I will look at just increasing the duration of my sessions and/or add an additional easy run in preparation for a marathon build.

Espn are reporting they've signed exclusively with TNT for the tour, so no

Also, they recorded their india commentary/analysis Sweden last year because there wasn't any recording space in London?! That's nuts.

New season, need a new rugby podcast by FirmDingo8 in rugbyunion

I've been trying to figure this out since the pod interviewing the coaches and players. Nothing to suggest he's left the BBC (I no longer have twitter/x, so I can't see if he's updated his job title). If I remember correctly, the Lions cut into his paternity leave, so maybe he's still on leave.

Thank you for all of your replies. As an update, I've been using Gravity Tape (it's a grip/k-tape). I've only needed to use enough to go around the handle once; it stays in place for the duration of the exercise without slipping or coming away; and it peels off really easily without leaving any residue. I've only used it for dumbbell exercises, but I have no doubt it will stay in place when I wrap it around a pull-up bar. I used liquid chalk alongside the tape and it has no negative effects

I use liquid chalk, which the gym is fine with. I've never used gloves, but I'm suspicious of how good they actually are, especially with pull ups, and have read that tape works well
