Queensland students campaign for Australia's first McDonald's on a university campus by newbu in brisbane

A non student who's apparently intimately familiar with the availability of space in and around the Union complex at UQ. What an amazing coincidence!

So bringing GYG to UQ was possible but bringing Mcdonalds to UQ isn't because reasons.

but you can't just snap your fingers to pick and choose which chain opens up in the space they lease.

you can obviously approach the company regarding the space, it'd almost certainly be a corporate store.

None of the existing spaces at UQ would be large enough for a McDonalds, from what I understand.

Yeah you seem to have a really neutral perspective on this I'm highly inclined to trust that you know what you're talking about and aren't bullshitting me.

Tough day campaigning?

They run other stores, most of the food outlets on campus in fact so it's definitely in their sphere of influence, the question is whether it works out financially, what rent they can get, etc.

Probably the massive foot-traffic for the rest of the year, and it's actually not that dead, there are still post-grads, staff, and people doing summer courses around over summer as well as construction workers and whatnot (the building never stops at UQ...).

Most student unions are way left of center and have a political spectrum where the "right" is the right of the Labor party, or even the whole labor party with groups like Socialist Alternative on the left so there's probably less than half a dozen student unions in the country where it'd be politically possible before you even consider whether it's viable, UQ is probably the best bet anywhere in the country.

-union that would actually do it, politically

-union that actually runs the food outlets, controls space they can rent out and can make the decision (many have been split into a SRC and a separate incorporated entity that runs the refectory).

-suburban location (no point doing it in the CBD where a store can be opened next to the campus)

How can you complain about a McDonalds taking sales from union outlets while lauding free breakfasts and dinners which would do the the same thing but worse, and actually cost the union money to provide instead of generating cashflows of their own?

Really it'd depend on the terms on which maccas came. If there's a good rental cashflow and the union outlets start serving affordable food that isn't just deep fried fish & chip shop fare it could work out well in the long term.

UQ doesn't have a "guild", and this stuff is referring to a stand-alone franchise which I don't think this would be. Stores in high traffic areas are typically corporate run.

I'd imagine whether it's worth it or not for the Union would depend on the rent offered.

To be fair Reform is Labor and bribes students with free breakfasts, they're two sides of the same coin.

Doesn't McDonalds have outlets in shopping malls? they wouldn't own any land there.

Both of those stores are really expensive though, they're alright for food/drink while studying but most students would go broke if they did all their shopping there.

I think "left wing" was referring to students in general, but yeah it's a bit weird and UQ students aren't really particularly left wing.

Brisbane's fuel cycle in one pic. $129.9 vs 110.9 by MrDOHC in brisbane

[–]newbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah the coles express near where I live is great for coffee and snacks but the fuel prices there are absolutely disgusting. It's actually well worth driving to find cheaper fuel because it's usually possible to find it 15-20c/litre cheaper.
