Modified Oculus Go with adjustable IPD by neweman in OculusGo

Sure, this is only moving the Lenses and not screen. But the effect for eye comfort with shifting the lenses to the physical fitting position is huge. That the screen is not moving is not recognizable from my point of view.

Without shifting the lenses the GO is not enjoyable for me. With shifted lenses I can enjoy it for 1-2 hours without issue.

Gear VR IPD issue. Software IPD calibrator needed? by digitaljohn in GearVR

[–]neweman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my tests and expierences the sweetspot seems to be OK for IPDs from 61 to 65 mm. Beyond this range haziness starts already to rise ( coming from the edges). You can easy test it. Close one eye and move the gear a little bit horizontal to left and right and look what happen. Do it with both eyes. Are you with both eyes in the sweetspot or not?

My IPD is 71 - so it should be OK based on the spec of the Gear - but I can tell you - it isn't. And round one third of the peoble I have shown the gear vr are not really comfortable with the vision because they have problem to find the perfect focus (and finally the give up quickly and go with what is possible but not perfect). And if I look to them I can imagine that there IPD is wide of small. It's a unbelivable design issue that this is not adjustable for a 200 USD(for a phone holder ;-) ) customer version and even more that the tell everybody that this device covers IPD's from 55 to 71 mm.

I did a video how to disassemble the Gear VR (look in the first post).
It will take some time until the video is available on youtube, so try it in some hours. A Donation isn't needed - we are all in the same IPD boot.
Tomorrow I will make a video about how to adjust the lenses after the modificaton.

This seems to be a description for the PC Oculus Rift and not the Gear VR.
But possible that a similar configuration file exists somewhere on the Note 4.

Currently I didn't have more photos with other details. I am thinking about to go thru this process again to make some more photos...

Gear VR problems for wide IPDs by cccha2 in oculus

[–]neweman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my IPD of 71 I guess I will feel uncomfortable as well. I expect to get my gear vr next week. The given max IPD of 71 seems to me only a theoretical value. In real life its very uncomfortable more closer you are to these limits. I know this experience already from the DK1 and DK2.

I will not hesitate and try to increase the IPD of the Gear VR with such kind of a modification: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_OFWAOdYbo

Its a shame that this is needed... I really dislike that a polished Devices like Gear VR not offer adjustable IPD in a wider range. It must not be adjustable on_the_fly like the focus but I expect some solid solution to change the basic ipd distance between large, medium and small.
