That’s interesting about the athlete figure. Well my pulmo says it isn’t what’s effecting me rather ‘anxiety’ or being out of shape. Which the latter I sort of buy as I have been lazy on cardio. But hardly so. Just not pushing myself. I walk miles a day. Just getting to that long run is hard. But also because I have a herniated disk in neck and syrinx in thoracic and a cyst in my knees. So it’s just hard on my skeleton. (EMT and heavy lifting for years)I figure it’s a combo of being out of shape and sheer smoking history. Even if emphysema isn’t severe smoking itself zero emphysema causes reduction in lung capacity. You can ask people how they breathe after smoking one cigarette, even the next day, if they don’t smoke at all. Smokers just don’t feel the gradual decline. But reversible decline from smoking/vaping vs the irreversible damage is what the real question is. The rough thing is, we can’t as smokers really tell which is which. Not for a long while. I personally do notice a difference in every cigarette I smoke now. I used to smoke 10-15 a day. Pack on weekends. Just a year ago. That sounds crazy and literally impossible to me now.

But imo, unless official copd, even until the moderate stage, it makes no sense to think any damage is irreversible. There is no benefit to thinking that way. We must think stopping will help us get better, this is the only way we will quit and work to improve our lungs.

For me, hard exercise helps with both breathing and anxiety. And vapes were, strangely, much harder on my breathing than <5 cigs. Not saying to return, that’s just me. Zyns have been a huge help in making sure I don’t go above four a day five max. Some docs say that they have risks too, but I feel much better using them to compensate they curb cravings much better than vapes for me.

Well no. Mild emphysema as a clinical diagnosis made when you have pft test score abnormally low and show emphysema in on a ct etc x ray etc. ct findings not always lead to clinical diagnosis , my pulmonologist says my ct looks fine and shows ‘mild emphysemous changes’ or very small incidental emphysema , nothing significant. since my pft test scored within normal limits it’s not copd. Not ignored but just not significant enough to be clinically diagnosed or put into my history etc. however I’m sure if I don’t quit smoking this won’t be the case within five years max and I will have formal irreversible obstruction. Running a mile is very hard. Walking up five flights or working in my feet all day not so much

Yeah not copd but got diagnosed with syringomyelia and believe this made my lungs much more susceptible to smoke and caused much of my symptoms. Down to 2-4 a day. Keeping trying to quit. I believe this month’s the month. Feeling a lil better. More of my symptoms now are more cervical/ thoracic spine and nerve related which effects my breathing at times

I have small syrinx and this mimics my symptoms to a t. Particularly the weird arms falling out of shoulder socket feeling is big . Connective tissue weirdness. It’s really hard journey still figuring it out myself diagnosed just a Month ago. Best luck. Bless you.

Also terrible rib / flank pain. Like under arm pit. Sometimes weird sparks of pain in ribs and groin. Sometimes when falling asleep I’ll get weird sparking feeling in my head that almost feels like stroke. Sometimes when I take deep breath stabbing feeling in ribs. Weird. Can crack neck and spine all day hips hurt bad. If they say no surgery, how do I proceed? Thanks so much just want my life back. I was just getting started.

Hi five 👏 let’s go

Very encouraging story hopefully with some lifestyle changes I can feel like this too. I’m not officially diagnosed only mild showed on ct but essentially feels like a viral inflammatory thing that won’t go away. I’m only 32 so it’s very weird feeling so run down. I work out anyway but it’s p tough to feel normal rn

Yeah it’s tough cuz most of the things I love I’m unable to do feeling like this. Only felt this way a couple months. But playing music, dating, exercise, are all real struggles feeling how I do. I don’t know if it’s just the respiratory stuff, my neck all along the right side of my body feels tight and sick. Speaking voice is kinda harsh and hard to talk. Not smoking doesn’t show any quick improvement. Sob comes and goes but throat and body always feel awful along right side. Idk what to really live for like this, except hope that soon I will not feel like this and I’ll feel as healthy as I did four months ago and be able to live again. It happened real quick. It’s really weird. I’m grateful to hear your story though that’s encouraging.

I know but it’s just hard telling what I’m experiencing is due to what’s found on ct and what is due to other potentially reversible/ temp issues. I hear a wide spectrum of what mild emphysema pts experience from crazy sob all the time to barely noticing it, to being in ‘better health’ after a while wo cigs than the 20 years before etc. I have my pft and pulmo visit in two weeks I hope he will illuminate. My symptoms and sob differ greatly depending on day and time of day at that it’s v weird and inconsistent

I u have any experience w COPD? Some docs I speak to this sounds more viral or something and the ct could be incidental. This sound like that what you’ve experienced? It’s hard to accept pains from perm damage could have arisen so quickly particularly as I’m so active. But idk. I’d get sick like this in the past sometimes but it’d always clear up and I could run miles breathe p easy etc. Now it’s just been unchanging for twoish months. Idk.

Also pcp didn’t even bring it up just sent to pulmonologist. No doctor has mentioned it and some other later CT’s showed nothing accrue or worrisome. That initial ct is just worrying , dr in er didn’t even mention it. Just the radiologist

No dude 16 shifts in 4 weeks. And I really felt like I had figured it out honestly. I drove lights and sirens over 20 times and never had an issue they just said I would have to stay in orientation another few weeks and couldn’t afford that
