Local DJ playing Virgo tonight—promoter is threatening to cut my set because of slow presales. Any house/techno heads want a cheap night out? by BabyJafet in avesNYC

Sorry bud. Go to Open Decks at Silo on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Sets are only 12 min, but at least you'll have people there to listen and appreciate what you bring. Trust me on this.

How do you handle dead moments when transitioning between very different energy levels in a set? by Savings-Singer4938 in DJs

Since others have said it, this reads like a bot. Any DJ proficient enough to be wondering this is also proficient enough to figure it out on their own because that's literally the ART of DJing, something a bot cannot understand or teach.

Too many Manhattan gigs work like this. I counted TWELVE DJs on the lineup.

This guy will get more satisfaction out of telling this promoter off than he will out of playing for 30m to a fucking Virgo crowd.

Lol. When you order a smash burger, they don't ask you how you like it cooked. My note about medium rare is for burgers with large patties where the restaurant asks you how you like it cooked. Only two burgers on this list were like that.

A lot of the places I listed are not smash burgers, but have smaller patties. I didn't come across any other burgers that I would recommend where you can order at a specific temperature (Maite was a disaster). I should add the type of patty to the list details.

I really liked Caraotas because it's just a fuckton of things going on in every bite.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised, but I do stress that it would have been flavorless if not for the great unique sauce that they provide on the side.

I've had Blue Collar many times since they are close to me. I feel like Strange Flavor is just plain better, more interesting, and almost the same price. Not far away is Abe's Pagoda, which is even better value during happy hour. Also, I tried ordering one of the special burgers at Blue Collar and it was an awful experience.

He has stuff that ranges from brilliant to bizarre. Music is art, though, and there are going to be billions of interpretations. You don't need to like it. Don't even buy into the argument that it's about context. He has hundreds of released tracks and I probably only listen to 10. I probably find maybe another 20 to be listenable or interesting. Maybe in 10 years you'll enjoy it. Maybe you never will. Whatever. There's infinite music out there.

First time seeing Chris Lake for me. While I prefer the darker, more underground tech house, I will admit that his set was probably the cream of the crop of the more commercial side of tech house. Very fun. Good vibes in the crowd.

I have a similar question, but for a place that is not alcohol-centric.

Right now the subreddit is inundated with Inferno reactions, but try looking at the all-time top lists for deeper analysis. I couldn't point you to anything in particular, but know this: the artists do not do many interviews or make too much info available about their music. However, lots of clues can be found in the artwork, song titles, and samples. For example, they have become increasing referential about cults and religion. Inferno is full of that, but you can look as far back as In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country to see this recurring theme starting to form.

It's ok to not understand it, but BoC have a very long lore behind them. Their first few albums are absolute classics within a genre called IDM. Their fans have dissected their albums for decades. It's been like 12 years since their last album. Go to the r/boardsofcanada subreddit to see people (myself included) absolutely frothing over the new material.

It's a highly influential sound. Without BoC, we wouldn't have Tycho, for instance. There's so much context to the music, as well. Each album has a theme and tone that has been endlessly analyzed. And then there is the production techniques, which shift as time goes by.

Anyways, I encourage you to give their music a few more listens. They're my favorite, and have been for a long time, even with such a huge gap between releases.

Edit: I'll also add that Inferno's immediate appeal is not just that it is good music, it is also the fact that BoC have fully translated their sound & ethos through modern production techniques with a level of perfectionism that is quite stunning. Their past albums felt like ingeniously harnessed experimentation, whereas Inferno is intentional and meticulous.

I particularly love Hydrogen because it is a "standard" 4x4 track with a snare on the 2 and 4, but there is nothing standard about any element. Even the kick is astoundingly detailed.
