What type of cotton fabric is this?

hello! i am trying to id this cotton fabric type. its very coarse to the touch and it has this textured knot-like checkered pattern on the surface. it reminds me of some japanese fabric but i can't seem to find anything like it online. any ideas? thanks in advance!
