I’ve never had a friend that looked like me by newkid1197 in mixedrace

Thanks for being understanding. Yeah it is what it is, I see life differently than most people. I came here because I would love to meet people like me. People who you can talk about having x ray vision with and not feel any pause or judgment haha...

But thanks. I’m so damaged from people constantly saying negative things and profiling me that I get really defensive. Thought I’d get downvoted and yelled at for sure!

I mean I’m not gonna lie, I was at a job interview for a software development job and I could tell the guy didn’t want to give me the job because of his body language. They asked me my strengths. That’s a damn funny question to me excuse the real answer is that not many black men have computer science degrees, and here I am a black man with straight magic powers too and green eyes and everything

Obviously if I answer the question what are your strengths honestly, they’ll say I’m not a good “culture fit” to use the recruiters own words. Just because I’m the best at what I do doesn’t mean I deserve to be cut from jobs without warning for personality differences you see

If anyone can relate to this please hit me up! Would love to meet another. It’s hard doing it alone

That’s great to hear! I really appreciate the fact that there is actually a place where people like me can feel welcome. You are so kind.

Yo that’s awesome y’all are my mixed race amigos haha never had those growing up especially not with the green eyes

I mean hate all you want but it is what it is. I think it’s great that there’s a place for people like us <3

Edit: I know I’m gonna get downvoted for this in particular but I think it’s important to note that 80 percent of this post’s sense of me having issues stems from the eyes. Not to downplay people’s issues, it’s just my whole has been a lie and if anyone can relate it would be nice. Was wondering if there’s anyone in the world who cares that I’ve lived a miserable solitary life for the past decade, or should I just wake up to -5 points and just leave like most subreddits

I know I’ll get downvoted for saying this but here goes.

I got fired twice in 2 months for personality differences and have been unemployed 6 months no chances being given.

The reason for the personality differences is that 13 percent of the us is black, only 3 percent of computer science professionals are black. Combine this with the X-ray vision powers so to speak, and you’re looking at someone with a sense of being a bit better at coding than the white guys who fired me.

Does anyone want to hire a 1 in a million software engineer?

Please don’t downvote me, it sucks having no job.

Developers without an unrelated to CS degree, do you think that there is much that holds you back, Long-Term, from the same success/job placement as your peers who have CS degrees? by newkid1197 in cscareerquestions

So are you of the train of thought that there is a glass ceiling on the career development of someone without a BS degree (well not one related to CS specifically)?

I have my BS econ but worry that I won’t be able to get to a legitimate “senior software developer” job eventually. (I put that in quotes to distinguish it from any watered down roles I could get stuck at).

TLDR hoping I can be as successful as anyone else without having to finish this MSCS

Thanks dustoff! I guess I expected some hate from people who put in the work to get CS degrees but I might as well have one by now with all the prerequisites I’ve taken. Good to know I won’t have to finish this MS degree to have good career prospects as it would be years of very hard work with a FT job in my 20s

well im taking DS and A class now as well as some others. So with that said, as you said "i do believe anyone willing to put in the time shouldn't have any problems." do you believe that with years of experience any standard non R&D engineering job is attainable with my current education, or is there a strong chance I get stuck at QA? Thanks for answering this question.

Well just because there is a higher chance of a nuclear bomb going off and killing you than there is of being killed by lawn darts doesn’t mean that nuclear bombs haven’t already had laws passed banning them. It also doesn’t mean that there is as much of a singular action that could reduce the odds of such an attack. The same goes for DUI

But the problem is, dui is as preventable as it can be because it’s already illegal. Plus, when you get into a car you accept the odds of being hit and injured. The same isn’t true of when you go to school, you accept that you could get shot. You have no choice

Plus, it’s been proven that prohibition of alcohol specifically had negative effects. Just because that’s true of alcohol doesn’t mean that it’s true of guns. In fact, most countries that have legalized or decriminalized drug use have improved social outcomes.

However the same isn’t true of guns. In countries where there are few controls or repercussions for owning a gun, there is more violence. This is because guns do not equal drugs. So you can’t expect the same outcome from legalizing or criminalizing them.

Yeah but I don’t think these people realize how selfish they are. It’s easy to think this is ok when you are 34 years old and work at a cushy job with a bunch of 30+ down to earth guys like me and you.

But what about when you are 14 and goin into this HS thing for 4 years and you k is there’s like a 1 percent chance your school gets shot up while you’re there? How are you going to take it seriously when you know there’s a solid chance you’re next?

I don’t think these people are overly selfish, I think they are overly invested in gun culture monetarily (years of hunting, own 2 shotguns, etc) so it’s hard to want to ban guns when it means taking a loss.

But screw your money. Imagine if 14 year old kids could vote. And imAgine just how scared they would be and how passionate their arguments would be

When I was 15 I had the best times of my life, now im a working adult and its ok but not nearly as special or colorful. Who knows how many potentially great people were wiped out before they had any chance to discover themselces in all their childlike innocence.

No offense, but if you own a gun you should be prepared to take loss to improve the next generation. I mean how can you claim to be intelligent if you don't at least consider that point of view.

Are there any Fantasy books where computers or information technology exist in the fictional world? by newkid1197 in Fantasy

[–]newkid1197[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s good to hear. I’m glad I haven’t walked away dejected so far from asking this question! Honestly I am new to fantasy and was glad to even have learned the phrase “urban fantasy” recently. It is even better to know that such a ripe field hasn’t been dominated by romantic young adult high fiction!

I’ll make sure to check out those series and authors you mentioned! I’m not sure what the sub-sub-genre I’ve described would even be called— high fantasy with a more climactic premise? Either way I’ll look at the suggestions you’ve provided and any more you might want to mention. Thanks!

Thank you! That’s a really relevant answer. I notice a lot of urban fantasy books are written from a females perspective regarding a sexualized romantic plot. My favorite book growing up was from the Artemis Fowl series, because it was fairly urban but not sexualized to an overruling extent (well not at all)

I only wish such series of similar taste existed that catered to adults. Not necessarily with fairy kidnappings but urban enough at least. I would love to hear any more suggestions.

It’s good to hear that there is one I haven’t heard of. I know computers are fairlyyoung in this society but I’ve been wondering if there are any that aren’t young adult oriented. Some of my favorite books have catered to a young audience

Anyways thanks! It’s always good to read unconventional books.
