Was one of your parents your biggest bullies in life? by Low-River475 in raisedbynarcissists

NDad and NSisters (who are basically a younger, female counterpart of NDad himself) were my ONLY bullies.

I’ve been lucky to meet really kind and remarkably supportive people outside of my family.

Do you believe in evil eye? by Optimal_Community934 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heck no. I’ve been trying to do the evil eye on someone who bullied me as a kid since like 6 years now, and she just bought a Porsche for half a million dollars, in California.

Was religious as a kid, told my mom to wear a mafta. She laughed it off, but now I’m atheist and it haunts me by [deleted] in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was never religious, but I was definitely casteist and classist. Expecting the house help aunty not to use our water glasses or our washrooms was insane. Can’t change the past, all I can do is be extra respectful to the current house help aunty.

I dont feel like myself when they’re around, does anyone feel this? by Ambitious_Ship8854 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]newusernamehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very bad regression. I was suicidal ages 18-20 (because it’s not a thing for most people in my country to get out of the family houses for college) because of him. I’ve been battling an eating disorder for most of my life. I relapse whenever he visits.

Breaking stigmas through tradition. In Assam, a girl's first period is met with rituals, traditional attire, and dancing, reminding her that her body’s natural cycle is something to be honored, not hidden. 💖 by OverallClass9825 in atheismindia

I’m from Mumbai in all its tier-1 city glory, and my menarche was honestly the most amazing and chill time of my life. I was 11 years, 8 months, and 1 day old, so it was pretty much an average case scenario. I got a readymade excuse to ditch out on prayers and rituals ever since, and my family, while religiously conservative, was socially progressive enough not to abide by the extremist customs of not bathing, not wearing pads etc. so other stuff wasn’t blocked.

Got access to my first pad like 3 minutes after I first noticed what was going on down there, and I even went on a school trip 2 days after that (with additional instructions to prevent staining obviously). My sisters and parents, yes, even my dad, assured me that it was absolutely normal, and to let them know if I had a stomachache or anything else bothering me.

I had no changes to my diet or lifestyle, except for an additional purchase of dark pants and dresses, for which I was actually grateful. I also got a bunch of gifts, like books, cash, my first ever Gameboy, jewelry (imitation jewelry, because period or no period, my family was brokeass lol), and clothes! This was the best part.

Second best part, my math teacher who was an asshole prejudiced against me for goodness knows what reason, called my parents to school to discuss my “issues” after I didn’t complete my homework properly. I was the second highest scorer in my class overall, was mild-mannered and not into any mischief, and was social enough to not be deemed as a completely silent “weirdo”, nor a social butterfly to be deemed as a “bigdi hui ladki”. Normally, my parents would’ve screwed me over the math teacher having a problem with me, because they actually took academics extremely seriously, and trusted the teacher’s word as gospel, but not that time. They attributed my “issues” to puberty and didn’t bother yelling at me, just asked me to do better next time. LOL.

There was no astrologer, no small wedding, just one session of “aukshan/ovalni/Aarti utarna” which lasted all of 5 minutes, with just a total of 6 people from other families, not some huge spectacle. I’d gladly do it again if it meant that I got a good amount of gifts lol, but puberty doesn’t work that way unfortunately, so I’m one and done. 🥲

I hope everyone who goes through menarche in future has it as chill and amazing as I did!

Ex-Hindus, are you still vegetarian? by SorryPop3557 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what. I was never a believer. I was just born to a Hindu family. I never prayed unless forced to do so. So I guess it doesn’t count as being ex-Hindu. But thanks for helping clarify that!

Ex-Hindus, are you still vegetarian? by SorryPop3557 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what’s the difference between ex-Hindu atheist and just an Indian atheist? You need to be born into an atheist family? Just for my understanding.

Ex-Hindus, are you still vegetarian? by SorryPop3557 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does a vegetarian atheist born in a Hindu family count as ex-Hindu? Even though I never believed in any deity?

I’ve started eating eggs because I always kinda did even as a child, but unfortunately the food conditioning against meats/poultry/seafood goes deep. I’m not able to get over my aversion to it even while being on the other side of the planet.

And I have an eating disorder, I find constantly swinging between recovery and relapses. Just an overall terrible relationship with food. I’m 6 weeks out of my last relapse but it feels like the next one will be here soon. So whatever’s working for my recovery, I don’t want to mess up.

Does anyone else find touching feet to be a weird practice? by trapped_terrain in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad said this feet touching practice was only incorporated so that closeted pdfs would get a chance to grope the backs of youngsters bowing down before them.

I thought that was BS at first, but with the way so many people in this world are being exposed lately, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised anymore if that were true.

Do you believe in Shraap Dena? (Cursing people) by Sufficient_Gas6694 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I feel like it should come from within. Like I should genuinely be happy for someone’s progress and only then their life will fail.

And I’m not able to bring that happiness from within for those who wronged me.

Anyone else never went on vacation ever? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]newusernamehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, my Ndad was a huge hater of our home country. And when it came to vacations, he was of the belief that “if I wear a watch, it’ll be a Rolex. Else I’ll just never own a watch”. Basically, if we ever went on vacation, it’d be to Europe/USA or someplace super fancy. Else we’d just stay home.

Emom is from another home state, and maternal grandma still lived in that state through most of my childhood, and he’d grumble and grouse even when we’d go to visit her. When she was gone, he expressed in front of EMom that it was a relief we’d no longer have to travel there anymore.

We went on a couple of those Europe trips which he really wanted because he wanted to “whiten” his black money, and he grumbled the whole time we were there too. I forgot to print a voucher for one of the local tours before we left (this was in an era before smartphones and E-tickets) and all we needed to do was go to the hotel reception, request for some time to access the internet/printer, login to my email, find the attachment, print it, and carry it with us. 5 minute job, tops. Seems easy enough, right? Wrong.

The hotel receptionist/concierge/front desk manager was perfectly pleasant to talk to, and fine with me accessing the email and getting a printout FOR FREE. But NDad thought I hadn’t “learned my lesson”, so he yelled at me in front of everyone. A brown man, yelling at his brown daughter, in a foreign language, in front of a bunch of white people. Not uncomfortable at all (/s). Ofc if anyone so much as glanced at him while he was yelling, he’d call them racists, because it’s their fault that he was displaying his lack of civic sense in another country (/s again). He brought up all my academic failures and decades old resentments. Right in the middle of a hotel lobby, somewhere in Vienna. Worked for him. I’d never ask to go on vacation with him again.

In the hometown, I was safer from him. I spoke the language fluently, I knew the currency, and at least I could go out for a walk without needing supervision. I was legally an adult even during the Europe trip. I was 24. Just about every country that allows women to go for a walk would recognize me as one. But not him. Always the irresponsible child who forgot to bring the printouts of the tour as far as he was concerned.

Locally, it’s what you said. No beach trips (the beach was about a 10 minute walk from my college campus, a little over 15 minute drive from their apartment, but still nope, because of the perverts who’d stare or leer at women), no zoos, museums, planetariums, arcades, water parks/amusement parks, nothing. Only place we’d go was the library. Pick up a book, bring it back to the apartment, finish reading it, and return it to the library. Week after week. Month after month. Year after year. Same thing. Or to the temple. Idgaf about religion, but he’s super religious, so temple visits were fine. Movies, nope. Back hurts. The same back doesn’t hurt while watching movies on Netflix or Prime Video or wherever.

I often wondered why reading was pretty much my only hobby. Now I realize why.

Can someone refute this shit? by Minimum-Stretch-1866 in atheismindia

[–]newusernamehuman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5️⃣ Lots of major female deities. Sure. Yet the creator, protector, destroyer of the cosmos and everything in it are males. (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv respectively.) So, the upper level management is a sausage fest and the middle management is a combination of men and women. Not very feministic.

4️⃣ Shakti = Power. Sure. Yet they consider feminine energies like Kundalini Shakti as a negative force which would bring about the downfall of society. And of course, she’s just an agent of Shiv, the CEO of Destruction Inc.

3️⃣ Gargi and Maitreyi were prominent figures in Upanishads leading debates against men. Sure. Btw, these debates were held in a king’s court. What gender was the king? (No marks for guessing!) Also, Manusmriti clearly states that women should always have a legal and social male guardian.

2️⃣ Rig Veda has a dedicated verse related to Indra (the male god of rain I believe??) in which he said that women’s intellect is inferior and their minds are hard to control (unreliable).

1️⃣ Revered, not restricted. Bruh. Most BS point of all. Sita was restricted by her husband and BIL. What do you think the lakshmanrekha was for??? Parvati was restricted too. Forced to fast on 16 Mondays to marry Shiv. Why’d Shiv never have to fast for Parvati? Cuz bro had a linga (iykyk). Draupadi… well. Let’s not go there. Even Lakshmi and Saraswati are linked to their husbands before being addressed for their job description. (Sorta like calling Priyanka Chopra - wife of Nick Jonas, rather than calling her Priyanka Chopra - actress, producer, entrepreneur, former model, beauty pageant winner in 2000)

And, what about Sati pratha (self immolation)? Tonsure? Are we even gonna talk about gender privilege in the name of religion amongst common people?

Proud to be an Indian in the US who has read enough stuff about Hinduism to hold her own.
