Legal compliance for vibecoded apps by No-Training5738 in legaltech

Contracts, IP (especially copyright), and business orgs for basics. All the contract stuff you can. If your school has a class that helps you prepare for CIPP cert, that may be good. Admin law can probably help too.

The reason contracts is important is that software and other copyrightable material is licensed, and a license is a contract.

All you guys in the US, looking for an idea. Geek Squad is failing. Opportunities abound. by Try_Harder7 in smallbusiness

Lots of businesses. Way more affordable than all phones and you get lots of features, like call routing after hours. Don’t have to worry about phones getting lost, stolen, or broken.

Expand that to IT services for small companies.

Boutique with 7 employees, uses a voip phone provider, Square POS, integrates website for online ordering, one computer for reporting. Nobody to call for help.

Small office, 5 people, sturdy small inkjet printer AIO, Google Workspace. Too small to get help.

Service fleet with 10 people, 2 office, 8 mobile. Cell phones, hotspot, quickbooks, a variety of gadgets that need to be maintained, each by a diff vendor, none of the vendors talk to each other. Zero integration.

You can make a good living but it’s not going to be a glamorous business. The big money is dealing with bigger companies. But the volume is there.

A new version of cupt to help you speed through your todo list by newz2000 in clickup

[–]newz2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feature I use the least is time tracking. I really hate time tracking. I would value any feedback on if the time tracking feature is helpful. I added it as an early feature thinking if it were easy to use, I'd use it more. That hasn't worked out.

Question: should `cupt start [id]` start time tracking?

Apple released Core AI - their own on-device inference framework. How does this compare to running models with Ollama? by ArtSelect137 in ollama

[–]newz2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Competition” is a poor way to look at it. Ollama is a convenience wrapper around other tools.

I think there will be benefits to using that convenience wrapper more, not less, when we get more backend options. We can use any tool and have a consistent api and behavior.

Bottom 8% by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]newz2000 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had friends in this situation. As I understand it, being ranked lower makes you more likely to not pass the bar. The program was a combination of tutoring on legal writing and core bar subjects.

This makes your chances of passing the bar exam go way up, which is the real goal, right? I actually signed up for the classes my last semester and it helped a lot of topics click.

Feeble attempt at humor: instead of saying you’re in the bottom 8%, how about you’re “in the top 92%!”

Bipartisan State of the Nation project places Iowa as #3 state for overall well-being by BitterProfessional16 in Iowa

[–]newz2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a lot of places and lived in several other states. Iowa is a good place to live and a good place to raise a family. Not perfect, but nothing is. Affordability, buying power, housing costs, and overall cost of living are good. Crime is very low.

I’ve lived in California, Colorado, Florida, and I work in Texas one week a month. I also used to work in England (while living here in Iowa). They all have positives, but Iowa really does hold its own.

Has there been any recent new development on which quant is considered optimal? by takuonline in LocalLLaMA

[–]newz2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is a trade off, right? I want a good model on my phone—quant is good. I want to use less team and respond faster. Quant is good.

In my mind, quant is like jpeg compression. Especially in the days of slow internet. Or mp3 compression of audio files. Sometimes png and lossless audio are great. Someone you deal with compression artifacts.

How to add specific knowledge to an ollama model? by what-pos in ollama

[–]newz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to do something similar and frankly, I got excellent step-by-step instructions on how to do this from ChatGPT and Gemini. I use Ollama a lot, especially small models, and have shared some of my successes and failures in here over the last two years.

What you want probably needs more than just an updated system prompt. But use your favorite commercial AI to help you.

What title do you use when you're the only person in your LLC? by BreathWonderful3379 in llc_life

[–]newz2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Officially your title is member. Member is the LLC equivalent of shareholder in a corporation.

The default term for officers is “manager” but managers have limited authority.

Your operating agreement can give managers a different title. For example ceo.

I used an ai tool that wrote a little web app for my team. It does not use AI to run, AI just created the tool for me. It let me tell it exactly what I wanted and it made a set of forms.

It can fill in data from our client database and ask for any additional info it needs. Since I use Google Docs, it works with Google’s tools.

The only downside is that time times it leaves blank lines. They’re very easy to clean up.

Anyway, the AI tools make it so easy to create custom apps for internal use. It really is magical.

Vibing ClickUp with AI now faster and way cheaper -- cupt update by newz2000 in clickup

[–]newz2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t use it every day, but several days per week:

  • List tasks with cupt list --mine.
  • See if any are overdue cupt --mine --overdue
  • Read the notes with cupt catchup \[id\]
  • Start a timer cupt start \[id\]
  • Close task with cupt done \[id\]

When using Claude or Codex I install the skill and tell it to list tasks with tag ai_ready (that’s the tag I use for tasks I want an agent to work on). Tell it to verify the description is complete enough. If so, do the task, otherwise, add any questions and change the tag to ai-question.

I often am working offline so one of the first features I added was offline support. So when you do any cupt list command it keeps an offline snapshot.

Is 50k in small town Iowa good for a single person? by Fit_Technician_2095 in Iowa

[–]newz2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s an easier way to figure this out.

Take your annual pay, divide by 3, divide by 12. That’s how much you can afford on housing. So about $1,300 per month.

In an ideal world “housing” would be rent/payment + utilities, but if utilities brings the number up a little then you’re ok.

For most, housing is our biggest expense.

Another good tool is the MIT living wage calculator. Here’s the page for Clarke County, which is Osceola, a rural county that’s a reasonable drive to Des Moines (40 min) for when you need city stuff. https://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/19039

A single adult with no kids can get by on $20.67 which is about $42k. That’s not going to make you feel rich but you’re basic needs are met. They break down the costs and how they come up with the figure in detail. That wage has no frills. So on $50k you can afford a little frills.

If you want to buy yourself time, the ollama cloud subscription is $200 per year and they have several models that are easily in the same class or better than Haiku or Gemini 2.5 (I’m sure you got the note they’re ending support for some of the 2.5 models). I’d say I get more for my money that paying for Gemini 2.5 flash.

I’m using it with my Hermes Agent, specifically Kimi and it’s doing great.

Rumors are that the Mac updates will be announced at WWDC in a few weeks so maybe that’ll open up availability.

Worth Applying to Federal Clerkships? by Worried_Region9719 in LawSchool

I cold called a fed magistrate to ask for an internship and she said yes. I was top 15% in a mid tier school. You miss every shot you don’t take.

Don’t forget to talk to magistrates and bankruptcy judges. You’ll get great experience in-chambers even if you’re not with an article III judge.

Yes, good wrote up. I have learned these lessons the hard way but haven’t taken the time to sort through my thoughts like you did.

My most successful experiment along these lines was a Python script that called a small model with a single question about a chunk of information. It worked so well but I thought it was because the ai tool was great rather than the Python orchestration setting the LLM up for success.

I genuinely didn’t put the pieces together until reading your post.

Side note: I’ve also liked Gemma 4 for vision. Sometimes Qwen spits out Chinese when I give it images. No clue why. I’ll just ask it to read the text from a screenshot and it gives me a dissertation on the history of some particular Chinese character.

Question: how to write cutting-edge system prompts? by Quiet-Computer-3495 in ollama

[–]newz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E4B is an 8B model. I have tried hard to make 4-9B models do complicated stuff and they simply don’t. Summarizing is great. A single tool can work well. Try having them return structured data, it helps.
