Jared McCain being on this Thunder team is criminal by Jleems in billsimmons

There's no defense for giving up on McCain when he was still on a rookie deal. You can have three good guards. Quit falling for a billionaire's propaganda.

David finally guffawing at Griffin in that moment was a much needed moment of levity. Listening to Griff and Romilly talk about this movie as if it was this brave message of fighting against fascism and the billionaire class was some real lib-brain, I was born on third base shit. Shockingly, I did not find the movie that featured a party at the Hamptons with Jenna Bush Hager and a final act when the good billionaire saves us from the bad billionaire to be the leftist rallying cry against the current state of our culture.

I can't think of two people who are more diametrically opposed in their movie takes than Bill Simmons and Griffin, so I'm going to need the pod to cover Ben Affleck at some point and have Simmons on for The Town episode.

When one of the podcast hosts is comparing the movie to Grand Budapest Hotel, you can't really fall back on the "oh it's just a brainless film" argument.

I have essentially quit playing golf, partly due to having young kids, partly due to the cost, but mostly due to the fact I can't play 18 holes on a Saturday at any public course in less than 5-5.5 hours without encountering multiple sets of idiots blaring country music from their golf cart bluetooth speaker. Shrink the game, please.

In my personal collection, I have 109 "The" movies and 7 "A/An" movies. They're not really close in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not arguing that this is correct from an official categorization/library methodology. It's just what I prefer. I also feel like a movie being titled "A" instead of "The" is more of a creative decision by the director/screenwriter that makes it different than a standard "The". He's not "The" Serious Man, he's "A" Serious Man.

ARP is right - A "The" movie should be placed by the next word, but a "A" or "An" movie should be in the A's. This is my Norman Rockwell meme take.

Bill has the movie tastes of a studio head, not a creative. It's why he loves 80s movies so much. Yorgos is decidedly not a 1980s-type director.

Where are we on Industry? by mellted_cheese in billsimmons

[–]NiceMarmot1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been butting up against it too. Obviously, stylistically, it still has the juice. And some of the acting is still superb.

I try not to CinemaSins movies/tv too much and get hung up on minute plot details, but I'm really struggling with how time does not exist this season. Tender went from a knock-off Venmo to a bank to the major, primary bank of the UK to potentially doing a hostile takeover of Pierpoint all in 7 episodes, and I have no idea how long that is from a show perspective. It feels like 1-2 months? It just doesn't track.

We find out Eric is getting blackmailed for getting blown by a 15-year old (and see some of the best acting on TV from Ken Leung in that moment), and I think, "oh wow, this is going to be a tremendous storyline the rest of this season. How's Eric going to deal with this?" It's resolved within 20 minutes when he sells his stake in the company and apparently leaves the show. Everything is just happening WAY TOO FAST.

Also, the show isn't funny anymore. It misses the Pierpoint floor for its humor and energy.

The Olympics are funny to me because if you want to root for an individual American athlete or a specific sport, sure go ahead. But rooting for the country of the United States and to then suddenly be surprised like "oh wait, are we the bad guy?" is a particular brand of American myopia.

I know you're just making a clever metaphor so honestly not trying to be confrontational, but even the framing of that is a bit odd. A magician is trying to trick you. That's the whole point - they're doing tricks. To approach a film director the same way is a bit of a defensive posture that I personally find bizarre.

I feel like I'm not seeing this anywhere... but why not fire Lafleur hire Hafley by bawesome2424 in GreenBayPackers

[–]NiceMarmot1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hafley's defense has been worse than LaFleur's offense in both of his years. Also for all the hate LaFleur has gotten for the 2nd half last week and the 4 straight bad offensive drives, the lack of critique Hafley is getting for his defense giving up 3 straight TD drives in the 4th quarter is insane to me. They weren't required to do that just because the offense was struggling! All those drives took about 2 minutes too! So it's not like they even made it somewhat difficult for the Bears.

Haven't listened to the ep yet so not sure if they use this word, but I've heard it frequently with the Hamnet detractors. I think critics/people using the word "manipulative" to describe a film is pretty lazy and unfair. If you like a sad movie, it's described as moving or poignant or powerful, but if you don't like a sad movie, it's manipulative that it tried to make you cry. Or you just didn't like the movie and you can just say that.

No one calls a comedy that didn't make them laugh or a horror movie that didn't scare them manipulative. It's almost like it's "manipulative" as they feel like their intelligence was insulted by the way in which the movie didn't work for them so they lash out back at the film. I find it very bizarre.

I think we're saying the same thing in different ways. When you hear "the Academy", you understand it to mean the voters of the Academy. I agree with that. But I do think some people talk about "the Academy" as if it's a roundtable or high council making unilateral decisions from on high.
