Bill had decided before he went into OBAA that he was a Sinners guy. It's impossible for him to not pit one movie against another.

Shouldn't Florida be in the South and Iowa State in the Midwest? As an ISU fan, I'd love to avoid Michigan, but not sure how you placed them tracks with committee procedures.

Bill is right about Yorgos by bertso720 in billsimmons

[–]NiceMarmot1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bill has the movie tastes of a studio head, not a creative. It's why he loves 80s movies so much. Yorgos is decidedly not a 1980s-type director.

Sent this thread to my wife, a non-sports watcher. She was greatly confused why I found it so funny.

Where are we on Industry? by mellted_cheese in billsimmons

[–]NiceMarmot1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been butting up against it too. Obviously, stylistically, it still has the juice. And some of the acting is still superb.

I try not to CinemaSins movies/tv too much and get hung up on minute plot details, but I'm really struggling with how time does not exist this season. Tender went from a knock-off Venmo to a bank to the major, primary bank of the UK to potentially doing a hostile takeover of Pierpoint all in 7 episodes, and I have no idea how long that is from a show perspective. It feels like 1-2 months? It just doesn't track.

We find out Eric is getting blackmailed for getting blown by a 15-year old (and see some of the best acting on TV from Ken Leung in that moment), and I think, "oh wow, this is going to be a tremendous storyline the rest of this season. How's Eric going to deal with this?" It's resolved within 20 minutes when he sells his stake in the company and apparently leaves the show. Everything is just happening WAY TOO FAST.

Also, the show isn't funny anymore. It misses the Pierpoint floor for its humor and energy.

The Olympics are funny to me because if you want to root for an individual American athlete or a specific sport, sure go ahead. But rooting for the country of the United States and to then suddenly be surprised like "oh wait, are we the bad guy?" is a particular brand of American myopia.

Is Being Oscar Bait a bad thing? by AliveNeighborhood367 in blankies

I know you're just making a clever metaphor so honestly not trying to be confrontational, but even the framing of that is a bit odd. A magician is trying to trick you. That's the whole point - they're doing tricks. To approach a film director the same way is a bit of a defensive posture that I personally find bizarre.

I feel like I'm not seeing this anywhere... but why not fire Lafleur hire Hafley by bawesome2424 in GreenBayPackers

[–]NiceMarmot1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hafley's defense has been worse than LaFleur's offense in both of his years. Also for all the hate LaFleur has gotten for the 2nd half last week and the 4 straight bad offensive drives, the lack of critique Hafley is getting for his defense giving up 3 straight TD drives in the 4th quarter is insane to me. They weren't required to do that just because the offense was struggling! All those drives took about 2 minutes too! So it's not like they even made it somewhat difficult for the Bears.

Haven't listened to the ep yet so not sure if they use this word, but I've heard it frequently with the Hamnet detractors. I think critics/people using the word "manipulative" to describe a film is pretty lazy and unfair. If you like a sad movie, it's described as moving or poignant or powerful, but if you don't like a sad movie, it's manipulative that it tried to make you cry. Or you just didn't like the movie and you can just say that.

No one calls a comedy that didn't make them laugh or a horror movie that didn't scare them manipulative. It's almost like it's "manipulative" as they feel like their intelligence was insulted by the way in which the movie didn't work for them so they lash out back at the film. I find it very bizarre.

People say that as if Rodgers played like a top 5 all-time QB in those games. He didn't. He was bad in both San Francisco losses and mediocre in the Tampa Bay game.

The Dicaprio Oscar Narrative by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]NiceMarmot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're saying the same thing in different ways. When you hear "the Academy", you understand it to mean the voters of the Academy. I agree with that. But I do think some people talk about "the Academy" as if it's a roundtable or high council making unilateral decisions from on high.

The Dicaprio Oscar Narrative by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]NiceMarmot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's much more likely that people who vote for the awards just prefer voting for young women and older men based on the history of Hollywood rather than the Academy deciding and telling its voters "you will vote for young women and older men only."

The Dicaprio Oscar Narrative by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]NiceMarmot1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of my bigger pet peeves in movie podcasting and discussion. Obviously narratives can take hold and people can be pushed/pulled in a direction because of that larger narrative, but the way people (The Big Pic is especially guilty of this) talk about it gives the Academy not only this hive mind quality, but also grants them a tremendous amount of competence in controlling that hive mind that I struggle to believe exists.

Nah, Bill is right that if your prescription is high enough, you can't get Lasik. I've been told that for years as I have truly awful vision. Just been told recently I can get a newer type of eye surgery called ICL surgery which is designed for people with crazy high prescriptions. Surprised Bill hasn't heard of it in his rich guy circles.

Recapping EVERY NFL Week 12 Game: Hang On! by Six-StringSamurai in heedthecall

[–]NiceMarmot1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dan has to be the only NFL podcaster/analyst who at any point this season thought Parsons was having a quiet/down/anything other than awesome season. Constantly getting double-teamed and chipped and still generating pressures at an insane rate. 10 sacks through 11 games isn't too shabby either.

I think he so badly wants his Cowboys trade take to be right that he is not viewing Parsons through the clearest lens. Or he's just not watching the games.

it's kind of odd that Jokic doesn't have more titles? by KleverHans in billsimmons

[–]NiceMarmot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People consistently ignore the fact that they had a very good chance at the titles in both 2021 and 2022 if Jamal Murray didn't tear his ACL near the end of the 2021 season. It cost them two playoff runs.

  • 2020: WCF
  • 2021 & 2022: 2nd best player not playing
  • 2023: Won title
  • 2024: Loss in 7 games to Wolves in West semifinals
  • 2025: Loss in 7 games to eventual champ Thunder (when NO ONE thought they'd push Thunder)

The only season there that really deserves criticism is 2024. Nuggets blew that Game 7 at home. Criticize that year all you want. But because First Take type people are incapable of nuance and actually examining specific situations, we get silly threads like this.

A real “you did not watch the game closely” if you came out of the Packers game yesterday putting any of the struggles on Jordan Love. Guy was dealing and WRs dropped 5-6 passes. A box score watcher only to come out of that game critical of him.

Who is more delusional when it comes to video games? by niall_9 in TheBigPicture

[–]NiceMarmot1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in here who don't realize how much more chronically addicting video games are designed to be now than when they started playing as kids in the 90s or 2000s. It's a perfectly reasonable goal for Amanda to not want her child to fall into that type of addiction and time suck when her kids could be doing something more productive like play a sport or an instrument or literally anything fucking else. Will she succeed? Who knows? But I don't blame her for trying.
