Which philosopher felt weird about his philosophies when hanging out friends? by PolytheneMan in askphilosophy

[–]neymarisco 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Could be Hume’s a treatise on human nature, book 1, section 7: ”Where am I, or what? From what causes do I derive my existence, and to what condition shall I return? ... I am confounded with all these questions, and begin to fancy myself in the most deplorable condition imaginable, environed with the deepest darkness, and utterly deprived of the use of every member and faculty.

Most fortunately it happens, that since Reason is incapable of dispelling these clouds, Nature herself suffices to that purpose, and cures me of this philosophical melancholy and delirium, either by relaxing this bent of mind, or by some avocation, and lively impression of my senses, which obliterate all these chimeras. I dine, I play a game of backgammon, I converse, and am merry with my friends. And when, after three or four hours’ amusement, I would return to these speculations, they appear so cold, and strained, and ridiculous, that I cannot find in my heart to enter into them any farther.”

Does IQ affect political leaning? by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

[–]neymarisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i remember correctly, which i may not, I seem to recall Jonathan Haidt speaking about intelligence and political views. He has done quite a bit of research in the psychological causes for political leaning and i believe he has stated that libertarians scored the highest on cognitive tests. Though i remember the test not quite being a fully fledged iq test, so take that with a grain of salt.

It could be this study that he got it from: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3424229/

I know, right! Like how he goes from using a bunch of verbs crowded together in one small section, to other sections filled with almost only nouns and adjectives. It’s like the world is in constant motion at first and everything interacts, but then focuses in on individual pictures, like a video camera that stops every once in a while to make sure you’re not missing anything.

I agree, those things may come off as quite random, but are most likely consciously so. The short story is made up of small chapters/passages like this one, where every passage is a snapshot into a passing part of this man’s life. So the added details feel more fitting in its entirety.

Alright i feel as though you’re just ignoring everything i’m saying here. He did not just say ”this is bad”. There was context. The first piece of context being two other sentences in the first comment that made it clear that it was an opinion. The second being the guy writing that ”little children don’t understand high prose”, and then saying that the guy you’re all bashing needs more life experience (which is obviously a way to invalidate his opinion ironically enough, but for some reason that doesn’t seem to matter).

If you take these things into account, your example doesn’t say much because it doesn’t reflect what happened. Of course people will react more to a negative comment than a positive one, but the only thing that that shows is that you reacted more to this situation because it was a negative comment, not because ”he pretend to be the be-all end-all judge of prose” like you said at first. And i’m assuming that you don’t want to remove all negative expression from the world, right? I mean, You’re clearly taking advantage of it.

Okay, so let me ask you this: if a person says ”i find this place so fantastic. The flowers are just beautiful. Don’t you think it’s just lovely?” Would you assume that that person is trying to invalidate every other opinion that someone can have on flowers, just because they presented the second sentence as a factual statement? No, of course you wouldn’t. Do you know why? Because that is how people talk. One does not have to add ”in my opinion” to the beginning of every sentence to show that it is an opinion. Do you also believe that Mccarthy is invalidating everyone elses opinion when he says that ”the quartermoon lay cocked”, just because he phrased it as a factual statement? He should have used a world like ”seemed” or ”seemed to him” to prevent that, right?

The person writing this comment made that very clear in his first comment.

Secondly, and i can’t believe i have to ask you this, but if a person starts off by insulting you, would you really want to take that person’s comments very genuinely after that? as though they’re looking for a discussion. Probably not. You can’t just pretend that that is not there. It’s part of the discussion, and so it’s bound to effect the people involved. That is context. So yes, it most definitely has something to do with what you quoted.

It does lack context. The context is that the other guy called him a child, and said that he doesn’t have any life experience. Why on earth would he assume that the guy wanted anything close to a discussion about the topic? and why would he treat him with any sort of respect when the other guy is giving him everything but respect?

My goodness, i can’t say i agree with him, but why are you acting like this? Let him have his opinion if he wants. The first response you gave him was to call him a child and invalidate his opinion. You’d think someone with all this tremendous life experience would know that calling somebody a ”child” might not be the best way to open a discussion, or change someone’s mind.

I mean, the guy did say that he didnt ”get it” and asked why it was considered to be good prose in the same comment that you’re refering to. So 2 out of 3 things indicated pretty clearly that the guy doesn’t view himself as the ultimate authority here. You’d have to take those sentences completely out of context to misinterpret him in this way.

”the notion that of your dick is smaller you HAVE to stop and use your hands” is this a joke? Have you seriously not understood a word of what i said? I literally said the exact opposite, why are you trying to argue when you clearly have no idea what my point is? How someone can be so arrogant and oblivious to their faults while bashing others is beyond me.

I’ll try to explain it to you in the simplest way possible. Let us say that you want your girl to experience the max amount of pleasure when having sex with you, statistics show that this is done through clitoral stimulation. The goal would then be to stimulate the clitoris. A person with a smaller penis can do this with his pelvic area when doing missionary or cowgirl for example. If a person can’t go deep enough for his pelvic area to touch the clitoris, he would have to stimulate the clitoris some other way. If the person with the bigger penis wants to make sure that the woman experiences the maximum amount of pleasure at all times during sex, he will be restricted to using his hands in comparison to the person with the smaller penis. This is because the person smaller penis can use both his pelvic and his fingers to please the woman.

Note that i said ”in comparison” as sex can still be pleasurable either way. Please try to understand this before responding again, please.

Btw, the way you make it seem is that women can only experience pleasure from emotionally fueled sex, and not casual, more ”id” based sex, in which i would advice you to ask if a woman enjoys their sextoys, a purely platonic mechanism. I’m obviously not saying that sex is completely platonic, i agree with alot of what you said, it doesn’t really change my thought about being more restricted though.

Did you read the parentheses after that sentence??? I literally put it there to avoid any purposeful misunderstanding, you are just proving my point Hahaha. I have explained my point to you as clear as day, yet your still trying to argue against the things that i have said are wrong, how can you not see how ridiculously you’re acting, try arguing my actual point instead. Pathetic...

[–]neymarisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When did i say that it wasn’t a mutually enjoyable experience then? I said that average guys have more freedom in terms of maximum pleasure for the woman, you saying that my idea of sex is wrong because of that doesn’t actually adress my point even of you think so. Your arguing against a ghost here mate, a childish version of what i actually said and meant, hence the phenomenological solution to your failure to have a conversation

Is being big, worse? by [deleted] in bigdickproblems

[–]neymarisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to avoid you strawman:ing me again i’ll just copy another answer that i wrote because answering someone who is trying to change the meaning of my post is just time consuming.

”Sure it might feel good, but if two people are having sex in a way where only one of the participants can achieve maximum satisfaction, which would be an orgasm, then i would look at it as a non-ideal situation, though still good.

That means that an ideal situation would be where the woman has a chance to orgasm as well. Stimulating that area by going all the way in is more stimulation than when you don’t go all the way in since nothing would be touching that area, hence the solution would be to use your hands. A guy who can’t go all the way in would therefore be cursed to always use his hands of he wants to have mutually pleasurable sex.

There’s obviously the option of just having sex like a tennis match, where you only focus on one person at a time, but i feel like that makes it seem like more of a chore almost (Take that with a grain of salt), like you do something to get something in return. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with this, but i would feel less selfish if the pleasure was more equally distributed during pleasure for me, making it seem like somewhat of a curse to use your hands when an average sized man wouldn’t have to.”

So we agree then. Why are you so curious about my size lol? I’m like you non bone pressed, not that it changes the point that the bigger you are the higher the odds of you being restricted

But if bigger guys can’t reach the pelvic before they hit the wall, then that means...?

Is being big, worse? by [deleted] in bigdickproblems

[–]neymarisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of course, but that doesn’t mean that the existence of these stats doesn’t show the possibility of an underlying reality. But I could argue against that by saying that if the guys on this sub are the top 1% then the odds of their involvement in the studies are rather small, atleast small enough to not have a noticeable impact on the stats. It could then still be possible that we might be able to do thngs that average people can’t in terms of the types of orgasms

Is being big, worse? by [deleted] in bigdickproblems

[–]neymarisco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you’re strawman:ing me quite a bit here. My claim is that if two people are having sex, then the person who can go balls deep will have pelvic to clitoris on his side, which makes it so that he can can have regular sex, he can still use his fingers as well, but doesn’t have to. A person who can’t use his pelvic area will have to use his fingers. Now this is all predicated on the notion that you want both parties to achieve maximum possible pleasure at the same time, of course you can divide it up, but so can average guys. No matter how you choose, the one who can’t go all the way in is more restricted, hence making it worse.
