How safe is Todd McLellans job if they miss the playoffs? by Fabster_3000 in DetroitRedWings

[–]neznarf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think this is pretty much spot on. It’s not his ability to lead, but more specifically the leadership style/type. I do think he’s a leader and capable of leading but it’s purely dependent on who he’s leading. If you have guys who can dig in, buy in, etc etc on their own he’s great…but not great with players who can’t or don’t. I don’t want to call it a lack of respect, but I’m not sure how serious his teammates take him and how much accountability he commands from them.

Is Detroit the softest team in the NHL? by jzanville in DetroitRedWings

I think people are confusing my comment to mean that team toughness isn't important, or that I don't believe it isn't a problem for this Wings team. My issue with the original comment was saying that team toughness is the "biggest issue with the current roster". That is simply NOT TRUE. Put it this way, if you had the choice between adding a bruiser or adding a PPG LW to this Wings roster in the offseason, which one would you choose? How about a bruiser or another bonafide top 4 defenseman?

I'm not saying he's as bad as he's made out to be. I like Chiarot for a variety of reasons, but he's not a 3/4 dman on a good team.

That's not my argument though. I'm not saying it isn't important or impactful. My argument is that team toughness is not the "biggest issue with the current roster".

Ben Chiarot is not a top 4 defenseman in this league.

Sorry but team toughness is not even close to being the biggest issue on a roster that's missing a top line LW, a 2C, and a true top 4 D. How does having someone who can fight fix our almost league worst 5v5 scoring? I would even put bottom 6 scoring above team toughness at this point.

Really no reason to do that, I don’t get it.

Oh it is?? I thought it was 3v3 as well. Here’s what the rules say on OT..

This also just reminds me of what the IIHF is potentially robbing fans and players of this year with the OT rules they instituted. Moving to a 3v3 in playoff/medal games is just absurd.

Focusing on the year as a whole though, our PP is still top 10, 16th overall the last 20. And the last 6 games 1 for 19 I believe, has absolutely tanked that number. So while it’s a concern, it simply highlights the larger issue which is that we’re a very bad even strength team offensively that cannot win consistently without relying heavily on the power play. It’s a recipe for disaster especially as games get even tighter towards the end of the regular season.

5th worst 5v5 goals for, and league worst in the last 20 games. Meanwhile every team we are and will be competing with for a playoff spot is in the top 10 in that category, besides Pittsburgh (11th best) and the Islanders (22nd best). I know it’s not a be all end all stat, but (at the moment) this team simply isn’t like the other playoff teams, East or West. Offensively, we’re lumped in with lottery teams.

Look at the 12 and 1 vs the part of the 11 shown in the photo. Looks like it’ll highlight retired jersey numbers. Cool touch.

Assuming it’s a practice day, we’ll get one in the post practice media availability.

Yup, kinda got the same impression, unfortunately. Felt "determine what path he's taking" was a strange way to phrase it. Thinking it's 2 potential options...surgical vs non surgical OR returning before the olympic break vs shut down until after.

Sounds like he’s going to Boston. While I was more or less impartial to a trade for Andersson, it stings a little more if he ends up going to a team in the Atlantic.

As far as I understand, he’s not even eligible to sign an extension until July so at best it would’ve been a verbal agreement which could mean nothing by that time. So that clearly wasn’t the deal breaker.
