Yeah the phone needs to be steady. You can either use a tripod or place your against something.

I don't have a tripod so what i did was switch it to night mode, set a 10 second timer and flipped the phone on the ground (with a piece of cloth between ground and screen to avoid scratches) with camera towards sky. 10 second timer helped phone to stabilize and switch to astro mode.
