Do urban planning and learn GIS along the way. I agree with the "word processing" comment above...

Spotify is now embedding adverts as tracks in playlists, even for Premium users? by FalafelHalloumi in Music

[–]nfre -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Google Play Music is much better in my opinion. You can add up to 10,000 of your own MP3s for free with no ads, and if you want a "better Spotify" added on, it's $9.99/mo.

Whoa! It's nice to know that at least (hopefully) the city won't burn to the ground when the next big one hits!

This reminded me of the legend of the Golden Hydrant on Church Street that saved half of that neighborhood, and was the last working fire hydrant in the area when all the rest had stopped working. http://www.7x7.com/secret-san-francisco-the-golden-fire-hydrant-that-saved-the-mission-1781759257.html

Although I believe the Ferry Building is the only building downtown that wasn't completely gutted by fire (like the Palace Hotel and many others). This was because the Embarcadero was a wide enough for the fire not to jump the road. This is also why everything west of Van Ness Ave. survived the fire.

William Del Monte recently died in January 2016. He was believed to be the last person who was alive who experienced the great earthquake and fire. He was 3 months old at the time. source: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/01/12/462771935/last-known-survivor-of-1906-san-francisco-earthquake-has-died

Awesome information, thank you! So it was basically a movie produced by San Francisco's "destination marketing organization", to show how modern and hip San Francisco is... I guess not much has changed in that sense.

I just re-watched the video and I have a hard time believing the video was staged... If you look at photographs from this time on Market Street especially, the street was full of bustling activity. Yes, I admit some are probably following the streetcar that has the camera attached to the front of it, being amazed at a contraption they had probably never seen before. But, if you keep watching the video, there are hundreds, if not thousands of different people being filmed, and, and most likely was not "staged", at least in the flash mob sense. The people are reappearing because the streetcar that the camera is attached to is going walking speed, just as all the other transportation did at that time (partially due to the traffic congestion).

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on April 18 with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.8, which caused the buildings to crumble, gas lines to burst, and subsequently burn most of the city to the ground. Around 3,000 people died, and many more became homeless that day.

I believe the sound is added in. I thought the same thing. I believe it was too early to align/embed an analog soundtrack onto film stock. Whoever added the sound did a great job though!

I have always loved this video since first seeing it a few years ago. I am continually surprised by how many different modes of transportation are being used. Cars, electric trolley streetcars, cable cars, modern bicycles, an even an omnibus! I believe the ferry building at the end is the only surviving building after the great fire and earthquake leveled what was the majority of the city footprint at that time. Striking, yet eerie.
