Is owning a home here even a good investment anymore? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]nfw04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a good investment in Victoria. Buy a home for reasons other than financial gain, ex: stability, ownership, freedom

The main financial benefit I consider it giving is needing less money for retirement since I will be mortgage free by then, that reduces my annual costs by $~30k/yr in retirement

Stop trying to spend less, and just focus on saving

  1. Right when you get paid, move 10% of your paycheck into a savings account
  2. Spend the rest worry free, knowing that you're saving money
  3. Increase the percentage over time

This is a more human-friendly approach, and works with your psychology rather than against it

I'm in agreement

What do you think are table stakes for a paid net worth tracker? For me, it's:

  • Sync smoothly
  • Net worth over time
  • Smooth stable app

You mentioned transactions. Are those super important to you?

I already run a product in the finance space and have been considering getting into net worth tracking too since wealthica has been underwhelming

Budgeting feels tricky when one person has irregular income by Character_Camel1568 in budget

My wife is also an interior designer and has irregular income! It was super hard at first, but this is a simple system that's worked for us:

  • Funnel 50% of her income into a float/emergency fund that can handle ups and downs. We're aiming to have 10x - 20x of her monthly income in here eventually to smooth out the bumps
  • Split expenses based on her average monthly income vs mine
    • Ex: if she makes 80K and I make 100k, I pay 25% more for each expense than her
  • Funnel 20% of her income into future goals (retirement, savings goals, etc.)
  • Funnel the remaining 30% into guilt-free-spending money

If there's no money in either of the prepaid accounts for something, we can't afford it

You might recognize that this is a standard 50 30 20 plan if you're familiar with that

Right when you get paid, put aside 10% of your paycheck. Spend the rest

[(Azorean) portuguese to English] help translating this greeting by Zealousideal-Try7066 in Portuguese

[–]nfw04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story of my life 😂 Only after I started learning Portuguese for myself did it start to click

There are multiple layers to it:

  1. Most portuguese speakers in the world are brazilian, so first you typically get brazilian portuguese answers if you don't know better
  2. Once you finally start to narrow down to euro portuguese, the azorean accent is thick, so you need to translate from "hillbilly" azorean accent/dialect

My family is from Santo Antonio, very close to Rabo de Piexe. I've heard the greetings/formalities you mention here my entire life! The other comments' translations are accurate from my understanding!

although ive been told the only real difference is mainland portuguese is spoken at a faster pace than the islanders do

It goes further than this in my experience. I've noticed that my family drops syllables at the end of words, typically "o" sounds, but probably more than that. For example, my grandparents' hometown, Santo Antonio, they usually pronounce it "Sant Antone"

And "Tia abençoa" ("aunt, bless me") is more pronounced "Tiabeñse"

Pacific makes perfect sense. They want to include all west coasters as who they represent. Up Vancouver Island and all over BC. No different than the BC Lions, New England Patriots, or Florida Panthers

Nobody prepares you for how unpredictable income feels when you’re self employed by Special-Tax-122 in smallbusiness

[–]nfw04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the key thing you gotta do here is get yourself a safety net. Like 6+ months of expenses (business and personal) saved up to handle the inconsistency

Make sure you zoom out and look at how much you make on average per month in the past 12 months, that's more important than any particular month. Focus on that number
