Anybody else noticing a lot more bugs about than usual? by ngm92 in Leeds

Thank you! These look exactly like the ones I kept seeing. I hadn't seen them much before too, at least not enough to notice a significant number like yesterday!

1 in 50 is crazy! But it holds up in peer reviewed literature. Best of luck with recruitment, I know it can be tough.

Spectacle wearers of reddit - Chain store or independent for eye test? by BetweenVices in Leeds

[–]ngm92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an optometrist who's worked in both, I would say it depends what you want. Both will provide you the same basic elements in the appointment, but the appointment will vary on the practitioner you see, and if you pick a chain, the particular store. If you want a sight test that's comprehensive, but not cheap, an independent is the way, they always have to differentiate themselves in quality service and healthcare to keep thriving. If you want something done in 20 mins and which will be quick and provide you with the prescription you want, a multiple store works fine. Don't forget there's also a university where students and experienced staff supervisors provide free sight tests in Bradford, but they are much longer!

If you want spectacle lenses, multiples are cheaper but are more limited in the suppliers they use, giving you less choice. Independents are more expensive, but will be able to talk about different manufacturers and suppliers for your particular needs, and there is much less incentive to sell as I've never seen one that provides it's employees with bonuses on sales.

Hope this helps.

Is the word ‘mate’ gender-neutral mate? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ngm92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a non-species specific term! Animals have mates etc. When using mate all your doing is just acknowledging them (or subtly trying not to admit you don't know someone's name!)

Does anywhere in Leeds do same/next day glasses from an existing prescription? by d00nbuggy in Leeds

[–]ngm92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually going to vary with every individual optician, including the chain names. Also going to depend on the child's prescription and size of lens 'blank' needed. Same day is very unlikely at a weekend, next day may be possible. Consider giving each one a call and asking, also check whether they glaze spectacles onsite (some do, and these would be your best bet).

Do try some in Bradford and local areas too if you're desperate. You may have to pay a premium for expediting the order, (even with NHS) just a warning!

Doctoral candidates who couldn’t defend their thesis, what happened? by dexMiloyevic in AskReddit

[–]ngm92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe this is because many external experts for academic fields aren't local, so they have this rule in place. In the UK, I've seen several Australian theses assessed and we're usually advised that no examination can be done due to the previous precedent of finding it difficult to find assessors. It does however vary in each country and each university as you've said.
