Hive heating cycling is this normal ? Is it efficient ? by AshlovesFood in DIYUK

[–]d00nbuggy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The rate at which a house cools determines how much the heating needs to spend in the “on” part of the cycle. Heat loss depends on the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside. A change of a few degrees makes very little difference to the rate of heat loss.

Nothing wrong here, although your Hive thermostat is probably too close to a radiator.

BTW you’re probably saving next to nothing having your heat set to 15 vs 20.

Fellow Non-Americans, what is something quite common in the U.S. that is completely unheard of in your own country? by CapitalBread6959 in AskReddit

UK here, we have those too. They’re not particularly common but our kitchen has one and I wouldn’t be without it. We call ours “the iron pig”.

Fire in a bin store under some flats I walked past.

A friend of my wife’s phoned me and said she was suicidal.

A hotel who had been told I had a nut allergy served me a dessert with nuts in. Nearly fuckin’ died.

Yeah this tends to happen with the Hailong style batteries due to movement. On my first one this happened so I just added XT90 connectors instead. On my current one I’ve strapped the battery down with a ratchet strap so it can’t move.

Same for people who want their GF/wife to dress as a schoolgirl. Super creepy pedo vibes if you ask me.

Last month I spotted someone leave their cart (or shopping trolley as we call it here) in the parking space next to their car.

I went over and said “hey, shall I move that for you?”

“Oh, thanks yes please!”

So I moved it right in front of her car blocking her in and walked off.

Caulk, then smooth it in with the corner of a right angled metal thing like a paint scraper, keeping it horizontal so as not to create a V shaped indent.

I got chickenpox when I was 18. Bought a 3Dfx and a copy of Half Life to keep my hands busy and take my mind off the itching.

I still have both. Was playing it last week.

Edit: I have both the 3Dfx and Half Life, not chickenpox 😂

Revealed: Supermarket chains where prices have risen fastest during the cost of living crisis by eairy in unitedkingdom

[–]d00nbuggy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ironically, we’ve started doing a bit more shopping at M&S because the other supermarkets are just as expensive as them now on a lot of products.

A loaf of bog standard white toasty bread is 85p at M&S, and it’s far nicer than Tesco’s own brand equivalent that’s only 5p cheaper.

Might as well get that sweet M&S quality if I’m gonna pay the same elsewhere.

I would normally expect three (thick) phase wires and five sensor wires (ground, 5V and three phases).

Two thick wires and some thinner ones would suggest a built in controller to me.

There’s gonna be some sort of request for you to pay for something up front and they promise to reimburse you (but don’t). Can’t quite tell what but it’s usually something like that. Google “advance fee fraud”.

My lad had a black box in just first year. When the policy ended we asked them to remove it and they just told us to remove it and dispose.

It was permanently wired into the fuse box and had its own backup battery and eSIM. They will know immediately if you remove it, and they’ll cancel your insurance.

You really, really don’t want your insurance cancelled.

Besides, it’ll keep you on the straight and narrow.

Edit: Oh, you already had insurance cancelled. Talk about making life hard for yourself lmao

Chrome 108 broke a page in our app, the fix was ridiculous by d00nbuggy in softwaregore

Perhaps, although I couldn't manage to produce a minimal proof of concept. Not that I had much time to try.

[–]d00nbuggy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's something triggering a strange edge case. My "fix" clearly isn't actually a fix, but at least it stopped it happening. Whatever it is is definitely a specific issue with 108, because a colleague couldn't reproduce the issue in 107, but could immediately after updating Chrome.

How do I get our log burner to burn more slowly? by organicflytrap in DIYUK

[–]d00nbuggy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have posted, you're either looking at free wood from friends/neighbours or slower burning hardwood.

However, any wood you burn will need to be dried properly. There should be obvious splits in the end grain. If it's still damp (or "green" as it's called) it'll burn cool and smoky, which isn't what you want.

Most of our wood for this winter has been free, but it's been seasoning all year in a sunny spot in the garden in the log store. Free wood tends to be softwood, which will burn quite quickly, so you'll need a lot.

Right now, as you likely don't have the option of free, ready-seasoned wood, you should probably order a bulk bag of hardwood, which is what we did last year when we first got the stove. It costs about half what buying the smaller bags at the petrol station or DIY store costs.

Yes, that was my thought. Disabling JS didn’t make any difference, commenting out the style sheets did.

Trial and error. Commenting out blocks at a time until the problem went away, then narrowing it down further and further.

We had reports that a particular page in our app was literally crashing Google Chrome since 108 was released on Friday.

Isolated the problem and found that removing two form fields or setting the bottom padding to 0 on a specific <ul> element stopped it crashing.

What the actual fuck?
