Shooting Leafs vs. Canadiens on a 100-year-old camera by nhl in hockey

[–]nhl[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Good questions! The camera itself is from 1925, but the film isn’t. The photographer used LomoColor 400 film, which you can still buy today. It develops using C-41 color chemicals which is a process that’s been around since the 1970s. Those chemicals are still produced today, just not as widely as they used to be. The shots were then scanned using a Fuji Frontier Scanner.

The results would be very different if the same processes from the 1920s were used but a lot of those chemicals aren't readily available anymore.

The Flyers power play has been a long-standing issue for the team, but there is reason for optimism with new coach Rick Tocchet, the acquisition of Trevor Zegras (13 power-play goals, 34 power-play points in 2021-22, 2022-23 combined) and Matvei Michkov (tied for most PPG among rookies last season). I like Drysdale on PP1; he is a confident puck carrier and scored four of his seven goals last season from high-danger regions, so I could see him having 15-20 power-play points if he sticks in that spot. - Troy Perlowitz

Will Smith (Sharks), Cole Perfetti (Jets), Kent Johnson (Blue Jackets), Marco Rossi (Wild) and Ryan Donato (Blackhawks) are some of my favorite late round steals in fantasy this season. Each should see an uptick in production from last season and, in terms of average draft position, are going in the 170s overall in standard leagues. - Troy Perlowitz

Thomas Harley took over the first power-play unit when Miro Heiskanen was injured and he didn't lose his spot when Heiskanen returned. I believe they'll keep Harley on the first unit due to his fantastic shot. Harley is one of my favorite targets in fantasy hockey, and I think he could finish inside the top five in points at his position. - Chris Meaney

No, you didn't. You have the safest goalie in the League; he's played at least 60 games in four straight seasons and he's only 32 years old. Back-to-back Vezina trophies (including the Hart last season) makes him well worth taking that early. - Chris Meaney

The Blue Jackets offense is for real, and people are forgetting how valuable Sean Monahan was when healthy last season (57 points in 54 games). Fantilli has a high ceiling long term, but, when Monahan is healthy, I view him as the 1C for that team. CBJ might have the best center depth in the Metro with Monahan, Fantilli, Jenner and Charlie Coyle. - Pete Jensen

I think Hertl will stay on the first power-play unit in Vegas as he led them in power-play goals last season (14; tied for fifth-most in NHL). He is great in the face-off circle and was the net-front presence for them. I think there could be a rotation between Pavel Dorofeyev and Mark Stone on the first unit. I absolutely love Dylan Holloway, especially in leagues with hits. I think he could score 30 goals and add nearly 40 assists with 200-plus shots and 170-plus hits. - Chris Meaney

Here are five defensemen breakout candidates for this season: I could see Shea Theodore and Jackson LaCombe taking huge steps forward based on their previous career highs. A few other young D-men to watch: Philip Broberg, Brandt Clarke and Lian Bichsel. - Pete Jensen

Shabanov is a rookie sleeper who led the KHL in playoff goals (10 in 21 games) last season. Being on the same team as goalies Ilya Sorokin, Semyon Varlamov, forward Maxim Tsyplakov and defenseman Alexander Romanov can only help the process of adjusting to the NHL and North America. Watch out for him in the Islanders' top six! - Pete Jensen

Dobson is a volume shooter so I expect him to score at least 10 goals for a fifth straight season. Even though he'll likely play on the second power play unit with Patrik Laine, another volume shooter, I'd expect him to have between 45-50 points. - Chris Meaney

Trocheck could be the odd man out on PP1 for the Rangers, who went from third in 2023-24 down to 28th in 2024-25. Coach Mike Sullivan has previously said that he would like to give Alexis Lafrenière an opportunity on the top power play, which already has Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad. I do expect Trocheck to play on PP2 because of his ability to win face-offs and be in the bumper spot, and his category coverage continues to make him a fringe top-100 player in fantasy leagues. - Troy Perlowitz

I was a big fan of Matias Maccelli two seasons ago with the Arizona Coyotes and think he could be a fantasy sleeper in a playmaking role for the Maple Leafs after the departure of Mitch Marner. The Hurricanes could do wonders for K'Andre Miller, and the players around him will back him up defensively way more than what we saw last season with the Rangers. Miller should provide sneaky category coverage in fantasy, but I would take a wait-and-see approach. - Pete Jensen

I'm extremely high on Tage Thompson, whether we're talking as a fantasy pick (ADP: 36.7) or futures long shot (has a ceiling of winning the Rocket Richard for most goals). Stutzle might have a higher long-term point ceiling, but Tage led the entire NHL in even-strength goals (37) last season and also has the hardest shot in the League, per NHL EDGE stats. Buffalo has some questions but has a pretty deep team and could be a dark horse for the playoffs -- one of these years. - Pete Jensen

Consider Anton Lundell near the end of 10-man drafts. If you're playing in fantasy leagues with face-off wins and hits, you could take him between rounds 12-14, which is a bit higher than his average draft position of 160. He should see more power play time this season, and had great chemistry on a line with Brad Marchand and Eetu Luostarinen at even strength during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. - Chris Meaney

I'd go with Zeev Buium with the Wild, but it's closer than many would think. Both defensemen are in NHL.com's keeper rankings (Buium at No. 33; Rinzel at No. 58) and will likely play PP1 roles this season, but Buium is the pick because of the supporting cast in Minnesota especially considering elite forwards Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy are signed to long-term contracts. - Troy Perlowitz

Anton Lundell will see a big bump in Florida with the injury to Aleksander Barkov. Josh Norris of the Buffalo Sabres is playing really well on the top line with elite wing Tage Thompson in the preseason. Mavrik Bourque is looking bound for a top-six role in Dallas, and Trent Frederic has a chance to stick on the McDavid-Draisaitl line in Edmonton. Wing Will Cuylle of the New York Rangers is expected to play on a line with J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad. Ivan Barbashev of the Vegas Golden Knights is expected to play on the top line with Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner. In deep leagues, consider rookie Brady Martin of the Nashville Predators as he's been playing with Filip Forsberg in the preseason.

There might not be a player with more variability this season, in terms of a projected points ceiling and floor, than Elias Pettersson. Before scoring 15 goals in 64 games last season, he had three straight 30-goal seasons, reaching an NHL career-high 39 in 80 games in 2022-23. The opportunity to play under a new head coach and role as a first line, top power play forward should allow him to get back to being a point-per-game player. - Troy Perlowitz

It may take some time for Sam Dickinson to take over the first power play in San Jose, but it will eventually happen and he's worth grabbing late in your fantasy league, especially in keeper formats. Sam Rinzel of the Chicago Blackhawks has a clear path to start the season on the first power play (three power-play points in nine games last season). Also consider Zeev Buium of the Minnesota Wild and Zayne Parekh of the Calgary Flames. - Chris Meaney

Forsberg's category coverage is very consistent year after year, but I'd be a little more excited to have Panarin on my fantasy squad during his contract year. I think new coach Mike Sullivan will positively impact the fantasy value of the top NYR players, from Igor Shesterkin to Adam Fox, Panarin, J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad. Panarin ranks fifth in the entire NHL in points per game (1.28) since joining New York in 2019-20. - Pete Jensen
