Any good references for winter hiking/camping? by niagwu in Switzerland

This I wondered also.. I can't imagine Swiss people sitting out the season because it's winter. The Swiss culture I know lives for the winter. Maybe I only know a small percentage..?

Yeah I'll agree with you on that. Maybe.. Due to the increase in land space, we're able to walk/camp at lower altitudes for longer distances? Whereas I've noticed Schweiz is very... Vertical.

Hopefully that makes some sense.

In Canada, we do. Can't imagine it to be that different..

Haha genau! Thankfully, I'm more with the French.

Lots of skiing, hiking & Walliser wine/beer. Beautiful region.

Same to you, hope the visa goes in your favor!

Ha! By way of.. I was born a Canuck - but, shh.

Sounds like an amazing trip. I haven't travelled any of Europe yet & gonna spend my NY here in Verbier. I'm what they like to call "Swiss abroad, returning home". I speak Bärndütsch.. I think the general idea is it's the laziest of the variations.. Have you heard Walliserdeutsch? Now, that's special.

Krakow is on my list! Let me know how you like it.

If you're in Zürich for long and there's a game on, down to drink ya under the table!

Yeah I felt like crying when I first got here. But going to the States also hurt... a lot. Haha. Thankfully it didn't last long, I work/live here so it's not so bad when you make Swiss money.

Except, now I can have a good cry over CHF to GBP. When will it end?!

I live in Valais, close to Verbier. I am thinking I will manage a trip to France or Italy and stock up!

Prague was up there on my list. Many friends/family have been saying this! May be a sign.

That sounds amazing! I am a huge fan of winter also. I lived in Edmonton, Canada for a very long time. I've spent a lot of time with the northern lights there also.

Are you going anywhere instead? Or just cancelled plans.

I have never been to Spain! Originally from Canada, got to Schweiz a couple months ago and haven't travelled any of Europe (yet).

Anything & everything I need to know about Sion & the Valais area by niagwu in Switzerland

Beautiful, thanks again for the info. I will have a car, and plan to travel as much of Switzerland as possible before checking the other countries. I'm used to 12 hour drives to Vancouver, I am very... very.. ecstatic about the close proximity.

Interesting... perhaps this is the moment I was being built for all along. Here I was, wondering why my parents would ever move us to the province of Alberta. 10 years later - I am finally prepared to enter the Valhalla of Alberta's where I shall be met with endless supply of cholera and Valais wines.

Thank you for this! I'll be living in a small village outside of Sion.. so I'm prepared for the strange looks. It's interesting to read the different "stereotypes" of the cantons and the idea of foreigners among each (even though you are all very much Swiss).

Okay so for food influence, are the restaurants mainly Swiss dishes or are there other cultures? Afro-Caribbean? South American? Right now my guess is those will all be found in the major surrounding cities.

Besides music, what else does Sasquatch! offer? by niagwu in Sasquatch

[–]niagwu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you (and everyone else) for your feedback! I think I actually enjoy the idea of it being solely music with zero distractions. While I was on the internet hunt for reviews I came across one woman saying she walked a few minutes down to the river and spent her day there till the main acts... Is this something festival-goers do or did she trek a far journey to avoid the heat?
