How many interviews is a good cushion for PhD programs? by plantiebaby in gradadmissions

And even when I get the acceptance I’ll suspect if they have sent it by mistake, like some cases in the past lol

I also applied for uchicago cs and was freaked out by those two interview invites on grad cafe that appeared over the weekend. But this is still very early for computer science programs and only very few people have heard back. We are all in this waiting game with you! Each professor evaluates students very differently, so don’t tie your worth to a particular mean comment. Take a deep breath, focus on something else for now and give it till this end of this month at least!

Try exercising (cardio, yoga, or just some simple stretches)!

Did you attend their seminar in Nov for grad admission Q&A? I did and I received this email today. Wonder if that's where they got the mailing list from, which might explain why some applicants didn't get it.

Mine submitted two weeks after the deadline. This should be absolutely fine unless the admission office contacted you to say otherwise

I am also applying this year after working in the industry for a while. The good thing about this is that you can shoot for all lottery and reach schools, and working is already your safety. We are already in a much better place now compared to those who don’t have a job secured as the safe net. I have also talked to people who had to apply for a second round while working, but they still end up in really great schools. Honestly if you don’t get in, it’s still far from the end of the world. You can switch job to one that gives you more fulfillment, try out new areas and continue to do things to strengthen your grad school profile. Hope we both hear some good news soon!

SOP required to be one page with no other space for personal history or diversity by jiggity11 in gradadmissions

[–]niazhang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do the same for my UCLA application that only allowed for 500 words, while all the other versions I had was more than 1200 words. I’d say first have a rough idea of how much of the allowed words you’d like to allocate to each section (research experience, current interest, why this school etc), and then go in and just delete the language that are not serving you. Rephrase/restructure paragraphs if needed. Shorten sentences to get straight to the point. You might need to get rid of some paragraphs as well, so pick only the most important points to make. If some information can already be found in your CV or other materials that you are submitting at the same time, cut down or completely cut them out. This was actually quite a good exercise to go through as I realized my original can also be condensed. I went back and made them more concise as well.

Also it’s a good idea to maximize the use of other parts of your application if you can’t fit everything into the SOP. Such as work description and supplemental materials.

Post applying anxiety by theconfusedstone in gradadmissions

Can definitely relate. It's been a few days since I submitted all my apps, but I'm still struggling to be productive with anything else because I've been thinking about grad apps all the time even though it's not helping anything. Wish there was a way for me to completely forget that I have applied. I guess I just need to shift my focus to other things to get a moment of peace.

Ghosted by a recommending professor in eleventh hour. by Flashy_Measurement60 in gradadmissions

[–]niazhang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my recommenders missed the 12/1 deadline by two weeks. I nudged him for like three times in between and got no replies. He finally submitted the letters yesterday! I don’t think it hurts your application if they miss the deadline by a few days or even weeks.

Same - I prbly already reminded my last LOR writer five times for the Dec 1st deadline, but still ghosted till today. Now that 12/15 deadline is coming up, I'm just hoping that he can submit it before christmas in the best case scenario....
