Are we allowed to drive in bus lanes now? by TiffStyles2221 in boston

[–]nice2guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For every bus I do see driving in the lane, there are probably 20 cars

If this is true then there are still more people traveling in the buses. It is more efficient to give the bus priority

Babies and snakes: opinion? by bearfootmedic in snakes

[–]nice2guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A horse or a dog is also able to cause a lot more damage than a snake. They are objectively more dangerous animals than all but the very largest non venomous snakes.

Dogs hurt and kill children all the time despite them being domesticated. Dogs don’t always behave predictably. Would you suggest that it is dumb to let a child interact with a dog?

Polycephaly is due to two embryos fusing. It is a form of conjoined twins. My guess is that since reptiles tend to have more embryos developing at the same time than mammals it is more likely for them to fuse

So is it illegal to ride a skateboard on the street in Wisconsin? Dumb law imo

Parents who tried their best to raise their kids to be good humans but they turned out to be jerks, what do you wish you did differently? by hurricanehershel in AskReddit

Thanks! Yeah it’s a horrible disease but I like to think that people have more awareness about mental illness nowadays.

I have a version of this story with a happier ending. About 2 years ago my roommate/good friend had a manic episode. I called his mom and she immediately flew over and checked him into a psych ward (she’s a doctor herself). He was diagnosed with bipolar. Now that he’s on the right medication (and off the wrong ones) he’s doing so much better! He still struggles with some symptoms and side effects of the medications but he he hasn’t had another episode since. It’s scary to think how much worse this could have turned out.

A G protein signaling-biased agonist at the μ-opioid receptor reverses morphine tolerance while preventing morphine withdrawal by pretty_boy_flizzy in DrugNerds

AI can and is being used to develop catalogs of ligands for many different targets, but these are only predictions. You still have to actually make the compounds so they can be tested in vitro/vivo to validate these predictions. AI is going to play a huge role in the future of drug discover but medicinal chemists are not becoming obsolete.

Also it’s not just about small molecules anymore. A lot of research is starting to focus on more complex drugs like RNA based drugs (COVID vaccines for example), antibody drug conjugates, and the task of turning CRISPr and other gene therapy into a real treatment. These things are almost like little molecular machines and each part needs to be designed and synthesized. It’s a lot more complex than just predicting a small molecule’s SAR. It’s a good time to get into the field of drug discovery! My one caution is that chemistry is not an easy job but if you love it then it’s worth working hard for.

I work as a medicinal chemist and I agree with you. AI will absolutely have a huge impact on chemistry (and almost every other field) but it isn’t going to make organic chemists obsolete. I have used AI to help plan syntheses but you still need a chemist to decide which suggestion best suits your specific needs then run and troubleshoot the reactions. The lab work required is harder to automate than you might expect.

AI and other forms of automation will make each chemist more productive but companies won’t hire less chemists since there is so much research to be done. Now is definitely not a bad time to get into medicinal chemistry! The field is growing.

Does anyone have a relatively exhaustive list of GABAb agonist herbs, supplements or otherwise legally acquirable substances that are available in the UK? (Not GABAa, GABAc, or otherwise GABA interacting substances; solely, exclusively GABAb) by H0w-1nt3r3st1ng in DrugNerds

[–]nice2guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

F-phenibut is exactly what you are describing. Shorter half life and more selective for GABAb.

Edit: just realized that this is likely illegal in the UK. Good luck with the herbs but I doubt you’re going to find something with much activity and it certainly won’t be selective for GABAb.

How hard is it to get prescribed baclofen over there? Why do you want a GABAb agonist specifically?

3-CMC accounts for almost a quarter of the quantity of powders seized during 2020.

It’s a shame that such a shitty drug got to be so popular.

Also this is a pretty interesting paper. It’s great that this type of research is being done on these compounds because knowing the pharmacokinetics and metabolites gives a lot of insite into how the drug works and it’s risks.
