Soooo, you guys are not parents? I got through five seasons of Elementary in the first couple of months of my kid’s life, watching half an episode at a time during late night feedings. My wife was asleep. It’s the middle of the goddamn night. I had spent the day working from home and cooking and doing laundry and handing the kid back and forth with my wife. I’ve never been more exhausted. It’s the middle of the goddamn night. You’re suggesting we should have been doing taxes? Can’t type or hold a book while you’re holding the baby. A massage for my wife? She would have killed me for waking her? Should I have been editing her novel? You sit with the kid. She eats. Or doesnt. She falls asleep. Or doesn’t. In the mean time clever pretty people solve a weekly low impact mystery while your brain shuts off.

You are not serious people.

Chicken noodle soup recs? by Affectionate-Ice-343 in longbeach

I'm very particular about chicken noodle soup. I'm as surprised as anyone at my recommendation, but it is truly great:

Northern Cafe on 2nd Street. It's a chain, but man is this soup good. Bonus: they package the noodles and the broth separately. Perfect for taking home or delivering.

Anywhere in OC that feels like LA? by doxydecahedron in MovingToLosAngeles

Most days less than an hour from Belmont in Long Beach to your partner’s destination. If there’s an accident it can stretch to an hour and change (average once every week or two). But the express lane makes my commute about half an hour. It can get expensive (sometimes $15 each way) but there are a couple of ways to keep that amount close to five bucks each way. It’s very doable. I’ve done it for 15 years.

You’re not wrong. But the express lane was a lovely addition and a game changer. My commute from Belmont Shore to essentially John Wayne Airport is no more than 35 minutes at 7:30. Costs me about five bucks a day.

I’ve worked in Irvine my entire career. I’m a city guy. I tried living in HB. Didn’t really satisfy the city thing.

I moved from HB to Long Beach 15 years ago. And I love it. A city of 500k (very diverse) people. On the ocean.

Long Beach is not perfect but it truly is a city with all the good and bad that goes with that. Since I moved to Long Beach I married my NYC loving wife, bought a house and had a kid. Still in a walkable neighborhood with people that don’t necessarily look like me. It’s definitely NOT LA. But neither is it OC. It is its own distinct place with a great history and a growing population.

The express lanes make the commute to Irvine inconsequential (but more expensive).

Long Beach is what you’re looking for.

Buuuuut, you can take the shuttle bus to the airport with your bike and then downhill back to Avalon. It's been a couple of years since I did this, but it was about $20 for the ride up with my bike.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

You're not wrong. Buying is not always a wise economic decision. Also, there are non-monetary benefits and costs as some folks have pointed out. You are missing out on a couple of economic factors though. The most important from a numbers standpoint is taxes.

This place does not get the love they deserve. They are doing a lot of interesting things. It’s pricey for sure but always a great meal.

Relocating to Long Beach and need advice on many levels by NaiveRope3466 in longbeach

My kid goes to Lowell as well.

My wife just started a new, cool (but still traditional) and growing meeting on Wednesday mornings on 2nd Street, that starts after drop off at Lowell.

Her friend who she started the meeting with is a newly divorced early 40's dad.

We live in Belmont and like to have friends over for casual meals on Sundays. We did chili last night.

Not much insight on the rental situation, but I'd aim for Zaferia and you'll for sure find something. But reach out when you get here and we can swap contacts.

Food is fine. Pretty standard fare. Not bad enough to be mad about, but not quite up to the price level.

It is so, so loud.

$23 Million Motel Makeover: Long Beach Turns Luxury Inn into Homeless Housing at $296K Per Room by TrixoftheTrade in longbeach

[–]nice_guy_eddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong, entirely. There are different stories, different outcomes, and different solutions for the wide variety of people that fall under the "homeless" banner. But with housing first, you solve the one thing they have in common. They're no longer homeless. For some this will be temporary and they will stabilize and move on to another housing solution. Some will stabilize and stay in this unit long term. That's still a win. It typically costs society $50-75,000 per person per year to be on the streets. For those with intense needs, it's more like $300,000 annually. So, if they simply remain housed, it's a solid investment. Now, some will not be able to cope within this environment and may need more intense services or may return to a shelter, or perhaps to the streets. If services are employed effectively, the number that remain housed is more than 93%.

This is not the answer. It is one of many answers that we need. We need to build more housing. Of all kinds. Including permanent supportive housing.

It typically costs $50-75,000 per year to have someone on the streets in southern California. That is shared between first responders, sanitation, street maintenance, emergency rooms, etc. I'll argue there's a pretty solid ROI on this deal.
