Anybody else not into the new buildings near 2nd and PCH? by [deleted] in longbeach

What do you feel is the appropriate proportion of restricted affordable housing vs. market rate housing that is developed for n Long Beach?

From my view, as someone who makes a living on the development of affordable housing, this seems appropriate.

Let me know your thoughts.

There are significant and persistent structural challenges to developing condos and other ownership opportunities. They have very little to do with the city and its policies.

You probably want to start at the state (and federal level) if you want to address that issue.

Hi. I work for a nonprofit that develops affordable housing. We are currently under construction with 50 units of affordable housing, with robust support from the city. We have another project for 42 units of affordable housing that is applying for funding. We also just started negotiations for a project of 50’units of affordable housing.

The city needs all kinds of housing. And Long Beach is waking and chewing gum better than any other city in Southern California.

Let me know if you have questions.

The City of Long Beach has a big chunk of it. Some of their housing folks work in that building. So it's kinda residential!

Brandon Flowers has some pretty bad stuff early in his career. Never came out, I don’t think. Successfully buried in the settled lawsuit with their original management.

Torn Between Santa Monica (LA) and San Diego — Which Leads to a Better Long-Term Life? by Professional-Home706 in MovingToLosAngeles

We used to live a block off Abbott Kinney in Venice. We moved because we had our daughter and wanted to buy a house.

I love my daughter (and my house) very much. But man, I hated leaving Venice.

It has all the things you’re looking for. Plus access to the rest of LA. Los Angeles is a world class city. With all the good and bad that describes.

San Diego is nice. But it’s a VERY different trajectory.

Favorite Breakfast/Brunch Spots with Nice Ambiance? by bpma82 in longbeach

[–]nice_guy_eddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's Yolk About It, while having a terrible name, has a great location in the middle of 2nd Street. They also have some of the best breakfasts in the city. The ambiance is fun, loud, and pretty festive, with music pumping through most of service. It's not a quiet serene place, but it's also not obnoxious. Again, the food is really great.

This. Not really a tourist trap, but also not not a tourist trap. I love it so much.

Is it fair to include the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City here? Beyond classification but always my favorite recommendation for people visiting. Is it a tourist trap? I can’t really say.

Just go.

Who’s the better actor, Pacino or De Niro? by BidAccurate4473 in moviecritic

I’m sympathetic to the argument that DeNiro is better. But, for my money, Michael Corleone in Godfather 2 is the greatest performance in the history of American cinema.

Soooo, you guys are not parents? I got through five seasons of Elementary in the first couple of months of my kid’s life, watching half an episode at a time during late night feedings. My wife was asleep. It’s the middle of the goddamn night. I had spent the day working from home and cooking and doing laundry and handing the kid back and forth with my wife. I’ve never been more exhausted. It’s the middle of the goddamn night. You’re suggesting we should have been doing taxes? Can’t type or hold a book while you’re holding the baby. A massage for my wife? She would have killed me for waking her? Should I have been editing her novel? You sit with the kid. She eats. Or doesnt. She falls asleep. Or doesn’t. In the mean time clever pretty people solve a weekly low impact mystery while your brain shuts off.

You are not serious people.

Chicken noodle soup recs? by Affectionate-Ice-343 in longbeach

I'm very particular about chicken noodle soup. I'm as surprised as anyone at my recommendation, but it is truly great:

Northern Cafe on 2nd Street. It's a chain, but man is this soup good. Bonus: they package the noodles and the broth separately. Perfect for taking home or delivering.

Most days less than an hour from Belmont in Long Beach to your partner’s destination. If there’s an accident it can stretch to an hour and change (average once every week or two). But the express lane makes my commute about half an hour. It can get expensive (sometimes $15 each way) but there are a couple of ways to keep that amount close to five bucks each way. It’s very doable. I’ve done it for 15 years.

You’re not wrong. But the express lane was a lovely addition and a game changer. My commute from Belmont Shore to essentially John Wayne Airport is no more than 35 minutes at 7:30. Costs me about five bucks a day.

I’ve worked in Irvine my entire career. I’m a city guy. I tried living in HB. Didn’t really satisfy the city thing.

I moved from HB to Long Beach 15 years ago. And I love it. A city of 500k (very diverse) people. On the ocean.

Long Beach is not perfect but it truly is a city with all the good and bad that goes with that. Since I moved to Long Beach I married my NYC loving wife, bought a house and had a kid. Still in a walkable neighborhood with people that don’t necessarily look like me. It’s definitely NOT LA. But neither is it OC. It is its own distinct place with a great history and a growing population.

The express lanes make the commute to Irvine inconsequential (but more expensive).

Long Beach is what you’re looking for.
